Is it okay as a full name? I know Olivia & all the Liv / livvy nicknames are very popular either way but regardless, is Liv fine on its own?

No. She will be called Lav by her foes, which is horrible.

ParkheadParadise · 31/01/2018 22:26

Yes, I know a Liv never heard her called anything else.

Greensleeves · 31/01/2018 22:28

I taught one, it was pronounced Leev (a long sound, like "leave")

SuperBeagle · 31/01/2018 22:42

Love it. Prefer it to Olivia.

It's an accepted, popular standalone name in Scandinavia.

Cannot imagine her being called "lav" Hmm. Loads of Olivias are Liv and I've never heard that before.

pipilangstrumpf · 01/02/2018 07:50

It is pronounced with a long i. So leeve. Nice name.

I'd worry it being mispronounced as Liv like to live.

Marcine · 01/02/2018 07:53

Pronounced Liv or Leev it's a lovely name.

I don't think 'lav' means anything to most children.

saritah · 01/02/2018 11:26

I've never heard the "Leev" pronunciation! Liv is pretty phonetic and Liv Tyler is well known enough. I know a Liv and she's never had pronunciation issues or been called Lav. She's Olivia officially but has always been Liv. Go for it OP, or use Olivia if you want to give her more options.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/02/2018 12:47

Yes I think Liv is fine on its own.

Marcine · 01/02/2018 13:10

Liv as a name on it's own is Scandinavian, hence most Livs pronounce it Leev.
As a shortening of Olivia it's Liv.

Elfyn · 01/02/2018 17:40

I love just Liv but so many Olivias are called that for short it put me off. Fine as a standalone name but I think you’ll find most people will assume it’s a nickname. I also think you’ll struggle with people pronouncing it “liv” if you want “leev”.

pipilangstrumpf · 01/02/2018 17:49

As a stand-alone name I would definitely pronounce Liv as Leev.

As a nickname for Olivia I'd pronounce it Liv.

RaininSummer · 01/02/2018 18:02

Never heard of the Leev pronunciation. Liv is nice enough but doesnt give any options.

AdultHumanFemale · 01/02/2018 18:56

It means 'life' in Swedish, and is, as Pipi says, pronounced 'leave'. Super nice name.

Hopingnwishing · 01/02/2018 19:37

No. I'd assume it was short for something. It doesn't sound very professional

Smoliver · 01/02/2018 20:08

Liv is popular in Scandinavian countries and means "life." Liv Tyler's mother named her so after the Norwegian actress Liv Ullman, after seeing her on the cover of a TV guide. Julianne Moore also named her daughter Liv.

So, in answer to your question, yes it does work as stand alone name - a very pretty one as well in my opinion Smile

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 01/02/2018 20:09

No

MotherFullOfChocolateFrogs · 01/02/2018 20:10

It looks unfinished to me sorry

sakura06 · 01/02/2018 20:25

Yes, it's lovely. I like the Swedish and English pronunciations too.

Sittinonthefloor · 01/02/2018 20:30

It doesn't look finished to me, why not call her Olivia for future-proofing. I always imagine CVs, liv might look rather informal in uk as people will assume it is an abbreviation .

BlackberryandNettle · 01/02/2018 21:09

I like liv but I reckon you/she would be asked what is was short for a lot. Lots of nice options for longer versions

RaininSummer · 01/02/2018 21:22

The Leev Liv version is nice but unless Swedish wouldn't most people say Liv and also assume it is short for Olivia which means a lifetime of correcting people.

MotherFullOfChocolateFrogs · 01/02/2018 21:43

I know a Lavinia known as Liv/Livi

I think Liv looks like a diminutive.

Just realised I’ve commented twice on this thread. Tired mother moment.
