How many parents allow the cat food brand to put them off Felix?

I love love love Felix, though all everyone online says is ‘cat food’. I can’t help feeling that once baby is here, no one will mind it so much.

There’s quite a few kids with unusual names whose parents I know says that they were almost put off by other people’s reactions, but now their kids are older most people agree that they couldn’t imagine anything else and they don’t get a double take. For instance, ‘Noa’ for a girl , ‘Koa’ for a girl (unrelated), ‘Phoenix ‘ for a boy and ‘Zelda’ for a girl in our nursery alone.

Everyone seems to like it for their own children and then sigh “but the cat food brand...” and go with something else.

It’s so hard to pick something that is unusual and yet the child won’t be bullied for...and at the same time, with all of the above names and many other unusual ones just in our small town, surely kids are less likely to be bullied for unusual names? I mean I’m not talking about names which are obviously embarrassing, kids would get bullied for being called Gaylord or Jesse etc no matter what where I live, but something simply unusual might be less of an issue...

anyway....Felix, yay or nay?

Ds is Felix. I just love the name and always have.

Crazycatlady80 · 28/01/2018 16:02

My 19 mo is a Felix and we absolutely love the name and so glad we went with it,
It totally suits him. No one has ever mentioned the cat food and to be honest there are a lot of brands/characters that you could associate with a lot of names, you just have to go with what you like. We have cats and have used the Felix brand but don’t really associate the two. Do it, you won’t regret it.

May I just say, this thread is proving extremely useful for the purposes of persuading DH...... Wink

I don’t associate Felix with cat food and really like it as a name but I do associate the name Kitty with the cat food Kit - e - cat because that’s what we used to feed our cat.

NotAgainYoda · 28/01/2018 18:12

I t's not an unusual name or one a child will get teased for.

I personally don't like it much - the fact it's associated with the cat food brand and before that a cartoon cat means to me it's a a name that will suit a little boy but not a man.

jaimelannistersgoldenhand · 28/01/2018 18:19

I would use Felix and Flora despite the brand names. I wouldn't use a brand name if it overlapped with something embarrassing like a condom brand or medicine when you have the runs.

halesie · 28/01/2018 18:26

We have a cat like Felix who likes Felix Grin Partly for that reason, and partly because we already knew a couple of Felixes, we used it as a middle name instead of first name. I still love it... and he loves the cat... so all is good Grin

SpottyBrolly · 28/01/2018 18:35

I like Felix and love the meaning. I wouldn't worry about the brand. Plenty of people their children Tom even though that is a cartoon/ male cat.

AugustRose · 28/01/2018 18:43

I didn't let it put me off, we did get some comments when we first mentioned it (my own mother included) but I quickly shut that down by telling people that the name means lucky/happy/fortunate and as our previous baby had died I hoped this one would be lucky!

That usually shut them up and I absolutely love the name still, DS is almost 7 and as far as I am aware he has never had any negative comments at school.

rachrach2 · 28/01/2018 19:13

It's the first thing I think about when I hear the name and would totally put me off. I do know a couple of Felix's - both great, confident men who carry the name off well and embrace the connection. Still would never consider it though.

BikeRunSki · 28/01/2018 19:16

Felix is not an unusual name!

NewYearNiki · 29/01/2018 00:00

I wouldn't worry about it.

It isnt as if you are naming him Moon Unit or something.

Felix isnt really a name that will incite glass bullying. Some people may know it is a cat food brand but it doesn't really matter.

I love Freya for a girl. Alot of people say it is a lingerie brand but whatever.

If you love the name, use it. I think it is cool.

NewYearNiki · 29/01/2018 00:00

Mass not glass

Katy75 · 29/01/2018 00:22

I love it!

I sympathise as I wanted ‘Ariel’ for my daughter, but DH said ‘like the washing powder’.....

NewYearNiki · 29/01/2018 00:44

Ooh Ariel.

That is a grand one. I like that name.

I would think Little Mermaid before I thought washing powder.
