Joey for a boy?

It would be the full given name, the fact it is normally a nickname doesn't bother me.

You might like Joey - but you're not the owner or bearer of the name - that person's most defining characteristic.

To persist with a name which limits its owner, and has negative characteristics, takes a considerable level of self-indulgence.

Sorry, I know Baby Names can be a pretty frank, and at times harsh forum, but you did ask for opinions.

Aquamarine1029 · 24/01/2018 20:52

Please don't do this to a baby who will grow up to be a man with a weak name like Joey. It's awful.

mondler · 24/01/2018 21:05

Sorry OP, I agree with the others. Joey is a cute nickname but I personally can't imagine it being the full name. There's lots of nice 'Jo' names you could have to give the baby a choice - Jonah, Jonas, Joseph, Joel, Jonathon, Joshua...

AtiaoftheJulii · 24/01/2018 21:12

One of my dc's best friends is Joey, so I'm rather fond of it. He is officially Joseph though, and like PPs, I'm a fan of giving a 'proper' name on the BC so you have options.

YolandiFuckinVisser · 24/01/2018 21:15

I immediately thought of Joey Deacon but that's cos I'm old

RedBlackberries · 24/01/2018 21:17

Sorry 'Joey from friends' is what comes to mind. It's cute for a toddler though.

EllenJanethickerknickers · 24/01/2018 21:18

Joey Deacon sprang to my mind as well. Kids these days won't have those negative connotations, thank goodness.

I’ve got a Joseph who’s been Joey to everyone for 19 years. He corrected anyone who called him Joe at school because there were several joes but he was the only Joey. I imagine he’ll be Joe when he starts working.

ooodile · 24/01/2018 21:46

Immediately think of a name for a budgie.

User197923462135 · 25/01/2018 17:37

My DH's name is Joe but I've always called him Joey. MIL hates it. I love it. It sounds so much softer than the quite blunt "Joe". If we have a boy, his middle name will be Joey.

MountainVista · 25/01/2018 23:34

I love Joey but PLEASE go with Joseph on BC to give him options and save him correcting people his whole life.

SharkSave · 26/01/2018 04:28

Call him Joseph on his birth certificate to at least give him a choice later on.
Could you imagine buying a house (for example) from a 40 year old Joey?! Bleurgh.

LilacBearberry · 26/01/2018 10:35

I like it

DiegoMadonna · 26/01/2018 10:43

I know two Joes (I assume they're Josephs but not actually sure) and both went by Joey and switched to Joe in year 6/7.

I really don't think teenagers and adults want to be called Joey.

PinkAvocado · 26/01/2018 10:48

Cute as a nickname but I think he’d thank you for giving him an alternative when older than 11ish.

EivissaSenorita · 26/01/2018 10:50

Joey is a budgies name

juneau · 26/01/2018 10:52

I think Joey is fine for a baby, but for a grown man? I'd give him Joseph as his full name and then you can give him whatever nickname you want.

lorisparkle · 26/01/2018 10:59

How about Jolyon as a full name with options of jo, joey, or Joel as nicknames.

tellitlikeitispls · 26/01/2018 11:03

We have a Joey - but it is Joseph on the birth certificate. I don't remember actively deciding he would be Joey - that's just what we've always called him. He can change it if he wants to but he doesn't seem fussed right now (he's nearly 11)
