These names are subject to change, but they are the two we keep coming back to at the moment.

Violet
Pros: lovely name. Floral but not OTT. Timeless. Currently haven't met anyone wth the name. An 'almost-anagram' of DP's name.
Cons: worried it will be too popular soon. People associate with horrible Violet from Roald Dahl book.
Tamsin
Pros: Never met anyone with the name. Dainty but strong, will age well. My suggestion. Cornish name (Cornwall is a dear place to me, not so much to DP).
Cons: meaning of Tamsin is 'Twin.' I know I shouldn't get caught up on meanings but growing up with a name of uncertain meaning myself I've always liked meanings.

I would go with Violet, I think it's a very pretty name and makes me think of the colour or flower before the Roald Dahl character. I'm not too keen on the name Tamsin, but that's probably because I knew a not very nice one at school and can't help but associate it with her.

Mrsknackered · 21/01/2018 18:55

I love Violet. I think it's timeless, I know it's up in the rankings but I only know an 80 year old, a 21 year old and a 6 year old Violet.

Not too keen on Tamsin. Trying to work out your DP's name...Elliot?

Movablefeast · 21/01/2018 18:55

I love Tamsin and it has been very lightly used since the 70s. Violet will date, its very 2010s.

mondler · 21/01/2018 18:57

I like both names. Violet is getting quite popular whereas I don't think Tamsin is climbing the charts quite so much. I know one of each (both in their 30s) and think they are lovely names. Does either go better with your surname/middle name?

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 21/01/2018 19:00

I know 4 little violets so if popularity bothers you I'd go for Tamsin.

NickSharratsFeltTip · 21/01/2018 19:01

Violet is very lovely. Tamsin is pretty but nn Tammy not so good. Prefer Cosima in that vein.

DramaAlpaca · 21/01/2018 19:02

I love Tamsin. I've only ever met two, one I was friends with at school and a five year old. I like the spelling Tamzin too.

Violet is also nice. You won't be going far wrong with either IMO.

I reckon DP is Oliver Wink

frasier · 21/01/2018 19:02

I knew two Tamsins, both middle aged now. No one at DS's school of that name that I know of.

I don't think Violet will be associated with the Dahl character, more the flower or colour.

Prefer Violet but that is only because I didn't like one of the Tasmins!

userabcname · 21/01/2018 19:10

I prefer Violet. I'm a secondary teacher and have definitely encountered a few Tamsins. I have yet to meet a Violet.

Movablefeast · 21/01/2018 19:28

That's because the horde of Violets are still in Primary Grin as I said, very 2010s.

Movablefeast · 21/01/2018 19:30

The Tamsins I have known never went by Tammy. It doesn't usually get shortened because it is two short syllables.

MancUnicorn · 21/01/2018 19:33

Mrsknackered not quite Wink DramaAlpaca -might be correct-

mondler surname is two syllables, Gaelic (pseudonym of a very popular author) so both names fit ok. Most women in my family have 3 syllable names that are 7 letters + which is why I think I'm struggling between the two. Still deciding middle names. Family/friends suggested Darcy but haven't come to terms with it yet.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees do you mind me asking what region you're in? I'm from the North-West of England whilst DP is from the East of England. We both live in Scotland presently.

NickSharratsFeltTip Nickname would maybe be Taz or Tam. I really dislike Tammy too, but I know with my family/friends a nickname would appear at some point.

Does anyone agree with Moveablefeast ? I am wondering if Violet will become one of those 'trend' names or just be lost in a sea of other floral names that are so popular at the moment.

Violet will be moving up to Secondary with best friends Ivy, Hazel and Isla.

Movablefeast · 21/01/2018 19:44

If you look at UK top 100 for 2017 Ivy was at 24 and had moved up 24 places in a year. Violet is at 69 but moved up 6. So in other words we are going to be hitting peak Violet in the next 5 years. Rosie and Lily are still storming. Tamsin is not in the top 100.

My DN Polly when she went to school 7 years ago became best friends with Molly, Lily and Milly. I kid you not.

In 4 years it will be Violet, Ivy and Isla by the barreload.

That is the Zeitgeist. All lovely names but Tamsin/Tamzin will be unique among them.

MikeUniformMike · 21/01/2018 19:45

Violet is often pronounced Vile-et.
Tamsin is nicer IMO.

RaindropsAndSparkles · 21/01/2018 19:47

Tamsin

Hopinthescotch · 21/01/2018 19:47

I know one Tamsin who is in her 30s. She isn't very keen on her name at all and said it was tiresome spelling it out all the time. I prefer Violet.

ChocolateCrunch · 21/01/2018 19:52

I prefer Violet. I know one adult Tamsin, who's always hated her name, especially if anyone calls her Tammy.

Movablefeast · 21/01/2018 19:52

Also the nn for Violet is Vi.

YearOfYouRemember · 21/01/2018 19:54

Violet definitely. I know an adorable two year old one. Tamsin is a cats name.

Movablefeast · 21/01/2018 19:54

Natasha is in the same vein as Tamsin to me.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 21/01/2018 19:54

I'm in London.

Movablefeast · 21/01/2018 19:55

See, two year old Violets! They are budding all over.

MancUnicorn · 21/01/2018 19:55

Moveablefeast fair point. That is one of my concerns. On another note, that is possibly the best matched friendship group ever haha!
MikeUniformMike you've raised a good point. I was surprised at the various pronunciations I've heard whilst asking around to be honest!
Hopinthescotch Both my mother and myself have had to spell out our names (first and surname, maiden and married) so to have a child who may have to follow in those footsteps could be a tradition! haha! Thankyou for giving the heads up though, I hadn't considered Tamsin a tricky name to spell hmmm

Plumes · 21/01/2018 19:56

Tamsin is great. Good strong name and I haven't met a young one in many a year.

The only Violets I know are over 80 or under 8 so definitely not timeless in my opinion. In fact 'faddy' is how I'd describe it. Vintage - tick. Floral - tick. Twee - tick.
