Libby?

What are peoples thoughts on Libby? I've always been the kinda person to want the full name on the BC to give the child options. But Elizabeth really isn't to our taste and we're worried it would get shortened to the more common 'Liz' instead, which again isn't my cup of tea.

Is Libby a stand alone name on its own or is there another longer version besides Elizabeth or Liberty?

Thanks

I was going to suggest Liberty, but see you’ve already considered that one.

I think it’s ok on its own, but I can think of nicer names, if I’m being totally honest.

ScreamingValenta · 20/01/2018 19:21

Could be short for Olivia.

tissuesosoft · 20/01/2018 19:22

It could be short for Isabelle, Arabelle, Lydia, Olivia. Libby is a pretty namr

Bobbiepin · 20/01/2018 19:22

I taught a Libby who was really Elizabeth. Her parents have always called her Libby so there was no confusion or Liz about her. Great kid too.

Whatififall · 20/01/2018 19:24

I work with a Libbie. It's her full name, not a nickname. It works as a grown up name.

SKYTVADDICT · 20/01/2018 19:27

I have a 21 year old Libby (just Libby). She went through a stage of spelling it Libbie but is now just back to Libby. I think she likes it as an adult lol

mum2be2boys · 20/01/2018 19:39

I love the name Libby :-)

HappyLollipop · 20/01/2018 19:47

I like it but it always makes me think of Libby from Sabrina the teenage witch, but that's just my age showing Grin

helpmum2003 · 20/01/2018 19:50

We know a Libby who has Elizabeth on BC but has only ever been known as Libby. Seems to work ok. Cute name.

helpmum2003 · 20/01/2018 19:50

In fact I know 2 age 15 and 14.

Wolfiefan · 20/01/2018 19:51

If you always call her Libby then people will call her that (regardless of what's on the birth certificate)

ChocolateCrunch · 20/01/2018 20:07

I know a 5 year old Libby, which is her full name.

hexagon01 · 20/01/2018 20:55

I know a Libby who is just Libby, never thought it strange and it suits all ages :)

mondler · 20/01/2018 21:19

Libby is lovely, but I would go with Liberty on the BC..

Charismam · 21/01/2018 16:18

I really like it! But I'd prefer Elizabeth as full name if you decided to make it a nn.

Libby is at least as strong a name in its own right as a lot of the popular names like Lily, Elle or Molly though. Don't see why Libby can't be the name full stop

XxMagpiexX · 21/01/2018 16:33

Lilibeth? X

Glumglowworm · 21/01/2018 17:05

I know a couple (both aged about 7 but no connection to each other) who are both just Libby

I have loved Libby as a nickname for Elizabeth since my teens (i blame Libby Kennedy from neighbours) but I like it as a stand-alone name as well

FailyDail · 21/01/2018 17:25

We’ve got a Libby (4yrs), full name Elizabeth on BC. We too didn’t want Liz as a nickname, and it has worked perfectly.

She’s never been called anything but Libby, we were able to register her at docs pre-school etc as Libby.
She’s registered at school as Elizabeth but has Libby on all her books/peg etc and we consider her first initial to be L not E.

lawyeredout82 · 22/01/2018 22:09

We have a Libby! Her full name is Olivia - which we use on her paperwork. It works well and I love both names.

SuperBeagle · 22/01/2018 22:53

People will assume she's Elizabeth, whether you put that on the BC or not.

If you insist on a shortening from day 1, people will follow your lead and she will only ever be known as Libby.

I'm an Elizabeth. I never liked Libby, nor Liz/Lizzy, so always insisted upon Ella and Ellie and that was fine. If you introduce your child as Libby, people will call her Libby.

RaininSummer · 22/01/2018 22:59

I cane across the name Libania recently. Unusual but would work.

lawyeredout82 · 22/01/2018 23:05

Superbeagle - we haven’t had anyone assume our daughter is an Elizabeth (she’s an Olivia). I introduce her as Olivia formally and we say “but you can call me Libby”.

SuperBeagle · 22/01/2018 23:13

lawyered Alright, but traditionally Libby is a shortening for Elizabeth. Much like you'd assume most Alexs are short for Alexandra or Alexander. Liv/Livvy would be the natural shortening for Olivia.

Allthecake · 22/01/2018 23:28

Libby is great on its own and I'm also normally a person who'd tend towards putting the full name on bc, but it totally depends on the names.
