Mabli? (not Welsh)

Is it OK to use Mabli (for a girl) with no Welsh connection?

And what do you think of the name?

How do you pronounce it? Is it May-blee?

TittyGolightly · 20/01/2018 10:55

Mabli is pronounced mab (like cab) lee.

ChocolateCrunch · 20/01/2018 17:38

I think it's OK to use, but I think most will pronounce it Mayblee.

Hopeful4444 · 20/01/2018 19:12

Oh I love it😍

Elfyn · 20/01/2018 21:33

Oh dear, I hadn’t thought of “mayblee” being a potential pronunciation. I don’t fancy correcting all the time, but I do love the name!

Does it matter that neither of us is Welsh?

It sounds very Welsh to me but you can use any name you want! Such a pretty name Smile

LittleCandle · 20/01/2018 21:38

DD2's name is spelled the Welsh way because I thought it looked pretty. Of course, people tell her she has mis-spelled it all the time and it annoyed her when she was a child that she couldn't get items with her name on it. There is no Welsh connection in my family. I just liked the name.

SuperBeagle · 20/01/2018 22:00

I would pronounce it May-blee.

I don't like it. I particularly don't like the correct pronunciation.

HappyLollipop · 20/01/2018 22:03

I've never heard it before and instantly pronounced it May-blee so I would expect you'll and your DD will be constantly correcting people, it's a lovely name though.

PaperdollCartoon · 20/01/2018 22:05

I would also pronounce it Mayblee as I don’t know the name, and I actually like that pronounciation. Mabli the correct way is nice but I do now say it in a welsh accent! I think it’s ok to correct people there are plenty of names that aren’t instantly recognisable and people learn quickly.

zeebeedee · 20/01/2018 23:10

I live in Yorkshire, and when DS1 went to the childminders (many years ago, he's an adult now) there was a Mabli there, with no welsh connections. It's lovely, and people will get used to the pronunciation very quickly

Mrsknackered · 20/01/2018 23:59

I really love Mabli. I don't think it matters at all that you are not Welsh.

SequinsOnEverything · 21/01/2018 00:05

I said it as Mab-lee to myself when I read the post title, so I don't think everyone would get it wrong.

If you love it then use it. I loved a name for dd1 but didn't use it because it was unusual and I worried about people saying/spelling it wrong. I still loved the name when dd2 was born 4 years later, so she's called it and I have never regretted it.

Buxbaum · 21/01/2018 00:10

Why on earth would you pronounce it ‘may’? ‘Mab’ is pronounced the same in both English and Welsh.

How do you pronounce Mabel?

pipilangstrumpf · 21/01/2018 07:05

I'd also say Mab-li.

Mabel is Mabe-l, so very different.

pipilangstrumpf · 21/01/2018 07:07

I think Manli is a lovely name!

Elfyn · 21/01/2018 08:35

Manli! Confused haha

Thanks everyone, it’s on the list for sure!

OP posts:
Buxbaum · 21/01/2018 08:46

Mabel has the split digraph a_e to give an ‘ay’ sound. Mabli has no vowel to alter the ‘a’ sound. It’s totally phonetically illogical to pronounce Mabli with an ‘ay’.

RosaBaby2 · 21/01/2018 10:49

I like it and would never think the pronunciation was anything other than Mab-lee!

pipilangstrumpf · 21/01/2018 11:36

Sorry I meant Mabli Blush

It's a lovely name. And I'd pronounce it Mab-li, like Manli.

MikeUniformMike · 21/01/2018 19:42

It's fine. If you have no welsh connections, why the username Elfyn?
(It's a boy's name pronounced Elvin, if anyone is interested)

Elfyn · 22/01/2018 02:07

Er... why not? Tried Elfin and it was taken is all.

Thanks again for all the input!

MikeUniformMike · 22/01/2018 02:30

I thought you meant Elfyn, the boy's name. There is a welsh poet called Menna Elfyn.

158ff · 30/01/2018 17:32

menna is a lovely name. adding that to my list
