Dd1 is called Clara.
We have a top boys name picked out but we're unsure if we have a girl.
Do you prefer Meredith or Juliet, and why please?

I think Juliet goes better with Clara. I like both names though.

aurorie11 · 16/01/2018 20:27

I have a Juliet, but shortened to Ettie. I've also heard Jet as a nickname

CountFosco · 16/01/2018 20:34

I prefer Meredith because it's less flouncy feminine than Juliet. Then I checked and it's a Welsh male name (although obviously there are a lot of female Merediths these days). So that will be why! I think both are fine though.

Smoliver · 16/01/2018 21:05

Love Juliet. Meredith is nice but Juliet just sounds prettier to me.

LovelyBranches · 16/01/2018 22:55

Meredith can be pronounced two ways, mer-ed-ith or mired-ith (not sure if that’s the clearest phonetic spelling). I’m Welsh and I would pronounce it the second way. I’d also expect it to be a male name.

Juliet, is an absolutely beautiful name. Would have been on our shortlist but Montague is a family surname and it was vetoed.

blinkineckmum · 16/01/2018 23:47

Juliet sounds nicer to me.

halfwitpicker · 16/01/2018 23:48

Juliet.

Highpeak · 17/01/2018 02:23

DD is Juliet, have never used a nickname but Ettie is cute, it's up to her if she wants to when older .
Really dislike - ith names, sounds more like - iff in my accent

Petalflowers · 17/01/2018 02:29

Both names are nice, but prefer Meredith.

CaledonianQueen · 17/01/2018 02:36

Ooh, I love Juliet/ Juliette, but then I love Romeo and Juliet!

Meredith is nice, I suspect your daughter might prefer you call her sister Merida or shorten her name to Merida. I love Merida but I am Scottish and love the Disney association. You also have Edith and Mer as possible shortenings of the name. (I personally hated the idea of my babies names being shortened, my DH has his name shortened and I hate it, so chose names that couldn't be shortened for that reason.)

AnElderlyLadyOfMediumHeight · 17/01/2018 02:43

Neither. Juliet was tragic and Meredith began life as a boy's name. I don't think either 'go' well with Clara.

How about Meriel, or, if you're after something Shakespearean, Beatrice or Miranda?

HuskyMcClusky · 17/01/2018 02:43

Juliet is pretty.

Meredith is frumpy and unappealing.

lizzieoak · 17/01/2018 03:50

Juliet is a lovely name and a number of nice nicknames can arise from the name (I’ve known adults who are called Julie, Jules, and Ju-Ju).

Meredith is okay - my dd was bullied by an evil girl named Meredith so I find it hard to be impartial.

DuggeeHugs · 17/01/2018 06:34

Meredith!

Juliet sounds ok but looks odd to me

SoftBlocks · 17/01/2018 06:51

Juliet.

FundayMorning · 17/01/2018 06:59

Obviously Juliet - surprised you have to ask.

Ikeameatballs · 17/01/2018 07:10

I think that Juliet goes best with Clara.

thepressureofaname · 17/01/2018 07:15

Hmm public opinion definitely leaning towards Juliet.
Meredith seems a bit love/ hate, which surprises me!
