What do you think of May/Mae/Mai as a first name? I know it is overused as a middle name but I have only heard of one little Mae in recent years. Which spelling would you prefer?
And would you use May/Mae/Mai on the birth cert or would you have it as a nickname.and have something else on the birth cert, and if so - what?!
Thanks!

Spelt as May

Mai/ Mae is chavvy

MsBlazen · 15/01/2018 19:29

My name is Mai. I'm in my twenties so was named before all the Mai middle names. I'm also half Asian so that's why it's spelled that way.

I would just spell it May. It's annoying how many people see my name and say My. I also hate how my name has become synonymous with Lillie-Mai or Ella-Mai etc

NotCornflakes · 15/01/2018 19:29

Lovely name, I prefer the Mae spelling.

Lovely name, I prefer the Mae spelling.

I prefer Mae.

Mai reads like the German month of May and is pronounced 'My'.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. No baby to name as yet but preparing to ttc dc3 and dd1 and dd2 were both nameless for a couple of days so I would like to get a shortlist together. We have a boy's name, I think.

dd1 and dd2 are Lily and Ava - both often combined with May for a middle.name. Would that put you off choosing it for a first name for a dd3?

I know a few people have said that May is a bit dull but our surname has 4 syllables so I am searching for simpler first names as opposed to exotic ones. Simple, elegant, pretty.
I also like Kate, Alice and Eloise and dh likes Charlotte...any other suggestions?

I really like the spelling of Mae - such a sweet little name.

BackforGood · 15/01/2018 23:07

Mai, as a Welsh name, is pronounced 'My'.

If you use it, please spell it 'May'.

I don't like it as a second name as it sounds like the start of a statement / where permission has been given. Plus of course, there are so many of them in the U5 population.

Angharad07 · 16/01/2018 19:54

I speak Welsh fluently and my whole education was taught in Welsh. I know how to pronounce Mai.

I wanted to find another way of explaining how to pronounce it instead of saying “my”, which it might sound similar to but the “a” has a very strong emphasis, but I thought that non-Welsh speakers wouldn’t understand how the “a” would sound in Welsh so I instead stressed the ‘i’ at the end and added a ‘h’ as a suggestion that it be soft.

May is nice. Weird if you are born in the middle of winter though. Don't use Mai - I would assume it was Eastern and pronounce it My

TheNoseyProject · 16/01/2018 20:31

Love May

daisypond · 16/01/2018 20:38

Mary? I think May is short for Mary or Margaret. It has nothing to do with the month of May. Zoe? Anna? Lucy?

butterfly990 · 16/01/2018 21:10

I had a friend at university called Maya. She was Chinese and everyone thought it was a Chinese name.

Her mother was reading up on the ancient Mayan civilisations and so called her Maya. You could spell it Meya.

sqidsin · 16/01/2018 21:29

Isn't Maya pronounced my-a?

Castlelough · 20/01/2018 10:24

I actually met a lady this week.with a baby called Maya pronounced May-a! Very unusual.

May is the only spelling that won’t label her. It’s rather a sweet name.

Mrsknackered · 20/01/2018 11:07

castlelough as a teenager I knew 3 Maya's and a Maia. One Maya and Maia were My-uh, and the other two Maya's were May-uh including DP's ex and one of the Maya's was also a boy. I always have to correct myself to My-uh these days as I naturally assume it's May-uh.

DempseysTightyWhities · 20/01/2018 11:20

I've only heard Maya being pn May-A.

FairfaxAikman · 20/01/2018 11:36

May is the best spelling. The others are the forerunners of Yooneek spellings IMO.

My great-granny was known as May, but her first name was Mary.
