Trying to think of a name for dc3 and struggling with boys names. We quite like Alec...seems a classic name, strong, not very popular (in a good way) and ds2 loves it!!

What do you think?

I like it, I think it's an old fashioned name that could totally work today. I'm not sure about it as a name on its own though. I'd probably go with Alexander on the birth cert and call him Alec.

ScreamingValenta · 14/01/2018 00:35

I really like it.

mondler · 14/01/2018 19:27

I like it, I know 3 of different ages and one of them was definitely just an 'Alec' I'm not sure if the others were Alecs or Alexanders but I think it totally works on its own. Its nice because its that little bit different but everyone knows it.

Esspee · 14/01/2018 19:29

Alex yes Alec no. He would always be teased about being smart.

CPtart · 14/01/2018 19:48

Awful. Think Alec Gilroy. Sounds like Alex mis-pronounced. ALex though is lovely (as is Alexander).

twinjocks · 14/01/2018 20:49

I really like it, much prefer it to Alex, which is far too common. There will be continual correcting to do, though, so as long as you're happy to accept that - I'd go for it!

RavenWings · 14/01/2018 20:51

I like it a lot. I agree that you'll have to correct people on it not being Alex, but that's not a big deal imo.

WildebeestH · 17/01/2018 23:16

We have an Alexander who is interchangeably Alec and Alex. His Scottish family in particular go with Alec. I’ve suggested he choose but he’s fine with both and sees them as different pronunciations of the same name. I think as others have suggested you’d have to expect that he will sometimes get Alex.

cantucciniamaretto · 17/01/2018 23:17

Awful. He's a 60 year old alcoholic, not a cute little baby.

BikeRunSki · 17/01/2018 23:27

I love it. I work with an Alec, I used to be his manager. No one ever calls him Alex.

Frillyhorseyknickers · 17/01/2018 23:30

My husband is Alexander (Alex) and it’s always the older generations that always pronounce it Alec (we like in middle England) it really boils my piss. Alex is much nicer.

HappyLollipop · 17/01/2018 23:36

I like it but all I can think of is Alec Baldwin.

Pannacott · 17/01/2018 23:48

Don't like it. Also I think the trend for old men / old ladies names (of the Alec generation) is waning. Will be very dated quickly.

Sixcatsandcounting · 18/01/2018 10:39

My dad & brother are called Alec. Family name for us and I love it. I think it’s unusual although very annoying when people mistakenly say “Alex” as I hate that name

pipilangstrumpf · 18/01/2018 11:11

Sounds like Alex without the s. Don't really like either Alex or Alec.

I do like Alexandra for a girl though.

iggleypiggly · 18/01/2018 11:17

I think bald old man = Alec Gilroy!

Rebeccaslicker · 18/01/2018 11:22

Alex is my favourite name for a boy, so I like Alec too.

I'd go with Alexander and then call him Alec. That way if he doesn't like it, he has lots of other options!

jellycat1 · 18/01/2018 12:15

Hmm no. I have an Alex but I don't like Alec. Funny what one little letter can do!

KatherinaMinola · 18/01/2018 12:17

I think 70yo man with a golfing jumper and a Morningside accent. Nice name though.

stopbeingadramallama · 19/01/2018 02:09

Awful. He's a 60 year old alcoholic, not a cute little baby.

Crying 😂😂😂😂😂

mojito55 · 19/01/2018 03:06

I do think that, with the popularity of Alex these days, if you call your child Alec he will be constantly correcting people.

Greensleeves · 19/01/2018 03:10

I think it's ok, not to my taste (makes me think of May to December)

I prefer Alex

duckponds · 19/01/2018 03:33

Much prefer it to Alex, which I really dislike

Thistlebelle · 19/01/2018 04:31

Good Scots name.

Jux · 11/02/2018 18:57

When I was 3 or 4 we had an Uncle Alec who was lovely; he wasn't a real uncle but he and his 2 sons lived with us for some months when his marriage broke up. Uncle Alec built us a Wendy House at the bottom of our garden in amongst the apple trees.

I feel very kindly towards the Alecs of this world.
