Estella is the front runner but would love to hear other creative ideas....

Ooh I love Estée!

Elodie? I have a child with an un-obvious nickname for their name as we preferred it to the usual shortenings. Literally no-one cares 😉

Pasithea · 13/01/2018 17:52

Gd is sienna but gets Essie.

LynetteScavo · 13/01/2018 18:01

There's a thread from 2015 with lots of suggestions...

Sorry don't know how to link to another thread on phone Blush

LynetteScavo · 13/01/2018 18:03

Alessandra & Esther are my favourites.

pipilangstrumpf · 13/01/2018 18:15

I'm not keen on the sound of Essie, sorry. I also find it strange that you are planning a potential nickname.

Why don't you find a name you love and call your dd that? Any potential nicknames may have no relation to her actual name.

I like Estelle! Beautiful name that I wouldn't shorten (esp not to Essie).

CharlotteC77 · 14/01/2018 10:13

@pipilangstrumpf I don't find it odd to choose a shorter version of a name first - I posted earlier to say I know plenty of people who have done it this way (Lottie/Charlotte, Piper/Philippa, Posy/Josephine. My sister was Bessie when she was growing up and goes by Elizabeth now. I was always jealous of the number of nicknames she got called by different people!). Lots of people like a shorter/cuter name for a child but with a more formal option when they grow up which I think is a good idea. As long as you like both the shorter and the longer versions - there's no point otherwise. Also think the above suggestion of Alessandra is a great shout. Lots of beautiful names to choose from!

I know a grown-up Essie and had never thought it sounded childish. Not sure if that is her full name though, but certainly what she professionally known as.

thamesk8 · 14/01/2018 22:54

@CharlotteC77 I completely agree!
And thanks for your help on my other post! Similar wavelengths I think!!! X

I know two adult Essi’s - the name is Finnish. The name derives from Esther, but is a name is in its own right.

SuburbanRhonda · 14/01/2018 22:59

I’ve also never heard of people choosing a nickname first! I always thought the child itself or their friends chose the nickname, not the parents.

But reading through posts on here, I know it’s a thing. Just seems an odd thing to me.

PricillaQueenOfTheDesert · 14/01/2018 23:00

How about Sarah Elizabeth, then Essie sounds like the initials.

wowfudge · 15/01/2018 14:24

Estelle and Estella just remind me of the character in Great Expectations.

HouseworkIsASin10 · 15/01/2018 14:35

I've always believed you choose the name first because you like it. (Not just a made up name to fit in.)

Nicknames evolve and mean different things to different people.

DD has a couple of nicknames, used by different friends/family.

steppemum · 15/01/2018 14:47

I thought you choose the proper name first and then the nickname comes from either that or the child itself. I haven't heard of choosing a nickname then trying to wrangle a proper name to fit!

there are loads of names that you might like as an abbreviation:
Tom, Kate, Liz, Lucy, Ben etc

If you love the short one and want to use it, then of course you might start with the short one and then find the long version.
eg, Kate could be short for Katherine, or Katelyn

pipilangstrumpf · 15/01/2018 22:43

eg, Kate could be short for Katherine, or Katelyn

But why not choose between Katherine and Katelyn? Potential nicknames can evolve naturally eg Kat, Kathy or something completely different. Or the name doesn't get shortened at all!

My kids' names (3 and 2 syllables) never get shortened.

ivenoideawhatimdoing · 15/01/2018 22:44

Estella? Like in Great Expectations

TammySwansonTwo · 15/01/2018 22:47

When I was younger I really wanted a daughter called Estella, because I loved Great expectations. Then I realised that Estella is probably not the ideal role model for a child ;)

Oh, and I have two boys now anyway!

RustyBear · 15/01/2018 22:47

My gran’s favourite Mills and Boon author was New Zealander Essie Summers - her given name was Ethel.

TammySwansonTwo · 15/01/2018 22:50

Also, I had a shortened name in mind for one of my boys, but didn't like it as a main name. In the end we chose another name which is similar, and which could be shortened to the name I liked.

The boys are 16mo now and I've never once called him by that name. Nicknames just seem to develop a life of their own!

Ragusa · 15/01/2018 22:58

You could say "I want to name my child Anne/Bob/Tom" and someone on here will invariably say "oh no! S/he will get teased!" Sheesh. Essie is perfectly nice. I think Estelle is my favourite. I wouldn't go with something short like Esme because I don't think essie is a plausible shortening for that. Essie and esme have the same number of syllables. I think you could probably do Elisabeth shortened to essie if that floats your boat.
