Boys name help

We have 2 DDs already and I'm pregnant again we will be keeping the baby's sex a surprise so need a list ready for each sex and will choose at birth which name works best - this worked the last two times! We are pretty much happy with our girls list.

Rose
Violet
Ivy
Hazel

But finding boys names hard. I don't like religious names which cuts a lot of boys names out and prefer Scottish or Irish names but not Gaelic as we don't speak Gaelic! The ones we have from previous births just don't feel right this time not sure why.

Connor
Duncan
Hamish
Angus
Mungo

Can anyone suggest any alternatives thanks :)

Fergus
Alasdair
Euan
Murdo
Rory

woollyjumperseason · 09/01/2018 20:55

Thanks @FinnegansCake we had Euan as a possibility for a while but ended up not liking the spelling I think and did't like the alternatives only the sound - strange I know! I do like Murdo and Rory though.

Ivo?

woollyjumperseason · 09/01/2018 21:01

@Wizzler Not a name I've heard of before it sounds a lot like Ivor which I like but just reminds me of Ivor the engine!

Hector, Liam, Magnus, Manus, Cormac, Cormag, Owen, Harold, Thorfinn, Alexander, Douglas, Arran, Taskill, Angus, Torquil, Henry, Henrik.

With ‘non-religious’ names.... do you mean no biblical names (easy), no names of popular names or no saint’s names at all(not so easy)?

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 10/01/2018 10:36

Fraser?

woollyjumperseason · 10/01/2018 10:41

@FreddieClaryHorshieLion prob no saints names or biblical names

OP posts:
FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 10/01/2018 10:57

Ok. :) that’s a lot of names, tbh...

There was saint named William, one named Declan, there was also a saint Mungo, there were serval saints named Finnian. There were also serval saint Alexanders (which might mean that you wouldn’t want to use Alasdair either? Idk...)

Hamish is (I believe) a form of James (and therefore bibilical),
Evan is a form of John (I believe? also biblical,) Aaron is biblical, Callum is also religious (there was a saint Colum, saint Columbias, the meaning -dove- was originally religiously significant)...

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 10/01/2018 11:01

That comment Blush

There was a saint name William, several saints named Finnian, several saint Alexanders...

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 10/01/2018 11:04

Btw, also a saint Magnus, a saint Cormac, a saint Harold...

There are so many ‘minor’ / ‘unpopular’ saints...

woollyjumperseason · 10/01/2018 11:51

Yes I hadn't realised there was so many saints but they do seem to be more prevalent in boys names than girls! But I suppose as long as they aren't obviously religious that is my main point. Grin

OP posts:
FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 10/01/2018 12:41

Yes, exactly Grin

I personally wouldn’t use names like Joseph, Abraham etc but would consider Cormac, Magnus andd names that are so commonly used that I just don’t see them as religious anymore...

Many nature and flower names (which are more popular for girls) don’t have religious connotations/ origins (no saints / biblical etc).

But there are actually a few relatively ‘unknown’ saints named Rose... ;)

TatianaLarina · 10/01/2018 15:07

Am liking Connor, Hamish, Angus. Hamish the most I think.

Sholto and Ossian are two of my fav Scottish boys’ names. Oisin is the Irish version.

MikeUniformMike · 10/01/2018 17:33

Ivo is pronounced Eevo (like Evo-stick)

How about Ewan? Or Welsh Iwan (pron Ewe-an)
