Aura

My husband is from a different country to me and wanted a name from his country for our next daughter (current daughter has English name). We couldn't find any that we liked so kept looking at English baby names. Then we found the name "Aura" which is from his country and immediately stood out to us because we had loved "Aurora" from the English lists but were a bit gutted to see how popular it had got. It is a name in several countries and has a nice meaning in all of them. But the more I've said it to myself, the more I'm thinking it sounds a little bit made up? What do you think?

It is an established name in many Asian languages .

As a migraine sufferer all I think of is the aura of flashing light I get before an attack.

GinIsIn · 09/01/2018 13:31

I was going to say migraines too - sorry!

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 09/01/2018 13:32

Migraines!

Fekko · 09/01/2018 13:32

Aurelia? Aura makes me think of migraines too (or as in 'she has a dark aura...')

DodoPatrol · 09/01/2018 13:33

Visual migraines here too, sorry!

Lucylululu · 09/01/2018 13:35

Yeah i did have the migraine thought too! And I love Aurelia but I'm never entirely sure how to say it correctly! Grin

I've never heard the migraine thing. I might think you were a bit 'woo' - because an aura is meant to be lights shining around people, that tell you something about them (though nobody agrees what - I love it when people say 'I can see auras', I just smile politely ...)

However if your surname is non British sounding I would just assume it was a cultural name (which it is)
Either way - not a made up word or name. Go for it if you love it.

Ohyesiam · 09/01/2018 13:37

Despite having worked at the National Neurological Hospital with migraine suffers for years, I think it's really pretty.
Sounds established rather than made up. Just the right side of unusual. Go for it op.

bababia · 09/01/2018 13:39

I think it's a really pretty name.

Fekko · 09/01/2018 13:39

Oh-ree-lia, or if you want an Italian flourish Auw-ree-lya

(go on, go on, go on, I will never get to use that name as it was out girls name choice!)

itusedtobeverydifferent · 09/01/2018 13:42

I like it. The main issue I can see is a lifetime of people getting it wrong and her having to correct!

WildRosesGrow · 09/01/2018 13:42

Is Aurora really becoming popular? Just looked it up and it did enter the top 100 names at 95 last year, so guess it could become more popular.

I like Aurelia, Aurora and Aura, only possible downside is people spelling Aura as Ora.

Enidblyton1 · 09/01/2018 13:51

If Aurora is only just the the top 100 names then it's not really very popular. I'd go with that if you like it best.
Aurelia is also lovely. I'm not a fan of Aura - imo not as pretty as Aurelia.

NewYearNiki · 09/01/2018 15:03

Even though I thought of migraines that isn't to say I dont like it.

It is pretty . If you like it use it!

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 09/01/2018 15:07

It’s pretty :)

It sounds / looks very ‘name-y’ (maybe because it reminds me of Avra and Aurora).

AnyaMoondial · 09/01/2018 15:30

How about Audra or Audrey. Both lovely names.

SwinginFromTheChandelier · 09/01/2018 16:21

Love Aura especially if it means something to you both!

Aurelia- pronounced Or-Ay-Lee-ah- at least that's the way the 1 Aurelia I know says it.
Or Aurelie- Or-rah-lie.

RavenWings · 09/01/2018 16:33

It's a bit 'woo' sounding to me as mentioned above. Puts me in mind of palm readers and mediums and seeing auras.

EssentialHummus · 09/01/2018 16:35

Woo for me.

I say Aurora.

Lucylululu · 09/01/2018 16:41

Thank you everyone for your feedback and suggestions! I've been saying 'Aurelia' over and over again for the past hour or so and I've fallen in love with it, so maybe we could go with Aurelia because it has a bit more to it and then use Aura as a nickname. Then again, more people than I expected have said they thought it was pretty so maybe we could go for that after all... (I know it is a bit weak to base my decision on other people's opinion but I think I'd feel really sad if I thought nobody else liked it!) It is a bit 'woo' (I've never heard this before hah but I know exactly what you mean!) though - I hadn't made the hippy-ish "I read auras" connection myself so another thing to think about! I'm so indecisive!
