What are your opinions? It is pronounced Ee mer. Thanks.

I know loads (Irish) and although it wouldn't be my absolute favourite, I definitely wouldn't say it's ugly! I wouldn't have thought it would create a pronunciation issue either.

DramaAlpaca · 08/01/2018 23:27

I like Eimear very much but have a slight preference for Emer.

There's more likely to be pronunciation difficulties in the UK with Eimear.

mammmamia · 08/01/2018 23:30

I don't mind it and I work with one but it just has too many vowels and doesn't look nice written down. Sorry.

mammmamia · 08/01/2018 23:30

How about Aoife?

mum2be2boys · 08/01/2018 23:34

I think it's a lovely name! I met an adult one today (from NI but working in England) and she was lovely :-)

SpacePenguin · 08/01/2018 23:41

So many harsh comments!

Eimear is a really lovely name. The 'Emer' spelling is probably easier in the long run. Exact same pronunciation in my part of the world.

And I've never heard it pronounced anything like 'Emma' despite hearing it spoken in various UK accents!

Mrsknackered · 08/01/2018 23:57

I had a teacher called Eimear, she was so lovely and it really makes me love the name.

Must say though, sounds much better with an Irish accent!

harrietm87 · 09/01/2018 05:59

I love it. Agree with pp though that it's not as nice when pronounced by English people without the "r" as "Eema" rather than "EemER". Same reason I wouldn't want to use Orla as I hate the English "Awla" - depends where you live and the accent though.

Battleax · 09/01/2018 06:01

I think it's pretty.

mathanxiety · 09/01/2018 06:06

Lovely name. I know dozens of them all late 40s, early 50s, if that makes any difference to you. It was such a popular name when I was a girl that girls named Emma were called Eimear/Emer.

I agree with Harriet - it will be pronounced EE-mah in many parts of the UK. I think this is as bad as Awla.

AuntieStella · 09/01/2018 06:45

I've only known one in RL (I didn't like her, so that would put me off the name but shouldn't matter to you).

Yes, people who've not seen the name before might mispronounce it (usual mistake is to say 'ei' as 'eye') but it not an unknown name, so you won't be correcting everyone.

I most definitely would not change the spelling, especially as you have an Irish surname (unless you already have eg a Shyvonne and think anglicised names match better)

Shutupanddance1 · 09/01/2018 06:51

Love Eimear!

SpacePenguin · 09/01/2018 11:04

Emer is actually the old Irish spelling.

BUT (I've only just discovered this) it should be pronounced with a 'v', almost like 'Eh-ver'! The spelling Eimhear is actually more correct given the pronunciation it should have (mh =v). Can't believe I never knew that.

Have never heard of an 'Eh-ver' in real life.

TabbyCat864 · 09/01/2018 13:12

Awful, sorry.

PeepoPleaseNo · 09/01/2018 13:17

I'm not keen. It's not a nice sound to my ears. Also know an Eimhar (pronounced almost Ay-var) and to be honest I really dislike it. Old Gaelic name but not popular around here.
