La-a

'my uncle's ex wife's uncles friends line managers vet knew a La-a'

It's bullshit. My eyes nearly roll out of my head every time I see it on here, and for the first time ever, I've heard it in real life.

If I am wrong, and you know a La-a I want cold, hard evidence.

It's pronounced Ladasha to anyone who hasn't heard the borderline racist urban myth.

This again🤔

Confused
sonlypuppyfat · 07/01/2018 23:04

Racist?

NineFortySixPM · 07/01/2018 23:05

Ladasha is a perfectly normal name though isn’t it? So probably some clever Ladasha noticed a neat little way of writing her name down as La-a and it spiralled from there. I quite like it actually.

Gacapa · 07/01/2018 23:08

When anyone trawls this one out, they usually think it's the height of apocryphal humour. Wankers.

I feel similar when people still say "pigeons are just rats with wings"... like everyone is going to double over with hilarity and admiration for such observational wit.

Embarrassing.

Mrsknackered · 07/01/2018 23:08

Sorry @anothernetter @stopbeingadramallama I didn't realise it had already been addressed on the baby names board.

And yes, @sonlypuppyfat I would argue that it is bordering on racist.

The word is full of La-as, (Ladasha)or She's world famous. Almost every unusual name thread that is created you can guarantee at least 2 people will pop saying they know this famous Ladasha.

Alisvolatpropiis · 08/01/2018 00:04

Grin Nine I would love that to be the actual origin of the urban myth! At high school I knew a Kasey who used to —graffiti— doodle her name as KC.

I always think of her when someone pops up saying they know of a KC pronounced Kasey!

Njordsgrrrl · 08/01/2018 00:07

Nope. I do know of a D-Anna though.

Dixiestampsagain · 08/01/2018 00:12

And nearly everyone seems to ‘know someone’ who ‘ knows someone’ called it. I believe I read that it had never been registered as a name with the ONS. It’s usually someone has a ‘friend’ who taught a girl called it. Bollocks did they.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 08/01/2018 01:34

I’ve never met a La-a but I have met an Aphrodisia. And if one person (or most likely even two people) come to the conclusion that this is a good name for their DD? Someone named KC or La-a might actually exist...

Battleax · 08/01/2018 04:40

You brought it up AGAIN to tell us it's bollocks? Confused

sashh · 08/01/2018 05:11

www.snopes.com/racial/language/le-a.asp

AuntieStella · 08/01/2018 06:48

There are people named La-a, but Snopes, who has been hunting this myth for a while. Has yet to find one older than the Internet myth

So yes, they exist, but only after the Internet had made the name widely known.

Unless one is found who is older.

(And yes, this name has been mentioned frequently on MN)

Battleax · 08/01/2018 06:50

So people have named their DC after the internet myth?! Weird old world out there.

BarbaraOcumbungles · 08/01/2018 06:57

What’s racist about it?

Booboostwo · 08/01/2018 07:27

What is racist about it?

Ladasha is an African-American name. La-a is a ridiculous, illiterate and downright bizarre spelling of it, so it suggests that people who use this name frequently, i.e. African-Americans on the whole, are illiterate, silly, etc.

TheDowagerCuntess · 08/01/2018 08:26

What’s racist about it?

If you don't know what's racist about it, you're either incredibly sheltered / unworldly, or you're being disingenuous.

Which of those is preferable....?

Jedbartletforpresident · 08/01/2018 08:36

Oh my friend's sister's husband's sister once taught a La-a 🙄

On the other hand, I genuinely do know a KC. She was the admissions director of the private school my DC attended when we were living in the US. I never found out what KC stood for (I assume something) as she was listed as KC in the faculty directory and always signed off as KC on official documents.

SoupDragon · 08/01/2018 08:41

According to birth records there is a L’A. Heaven knows how you’d pronounce it though.

La-a
Dolwar · 08/01/2018 11:47

There is one in South Wales, a friend is a paediatric doctor and met her

flowa79 · 08/01/2018 13:54

My nephews middle name is KC pronounced casey after his 2 other brothers (kyle and connor)

Zampa · 08/01/2018 14:01

@dolwar We may know the same paediatric doctor as a friend of mine in the same profession has also met one. She's married to a black guy so would question whether she's racist.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 08/01/2018 20:38

Funny you should say that, Jed because.
My neighbours brothers wife's best friends aunties dog walkers nephew, also went to school with a La-a. Wonder if it's the same one. Grin

Dixiestampsagain · 10/01/2018 00:13

Oh dear lord- it’s only just struck me, seeing it written down so many times, that my dd name (Lara) is only a vertical line away from being La-a 😂
