Brianna

Was struggling with girls names but DH suggested Brianna. Pronounced Breeanna.
I like that it's unusual but not unheard of and the shortening of Bree is pretty too.

What do you think, yay or nay?

Mxyzptlk · 06/01/2018 22:11

I think it's pretty, as long as DH's name isn't Brian.

FairfaxAikman · 06/01/2018 22:11

It's not. Grin

I just think of the infinitely annoying Brianna Randall from Outlander.

It's v American which is not my cup of tea. Much prefer Bryony.

BuzzKillington · 06/01/2018 22:17

It's v American.

I am not keen on male names with an 'a' on the end. Brian, Alan, Nigel etc

regularbutpanickingabit · 06/01/2018 22:22

Not a name I would have chosen but now know a beautiful and very lovely Brianna and so it has a lovely 'glow' about it as a name!

FairfaxAikman · 06/01/2018 22:58

To everyone saying it's an American name, it has Celtic roots.
(Though as half of Americans seem to identify as Irish or Scottish it's maybe no surprise that names from those countries are popular over there)

I think it’s very pretty and quite original while not being made up - three ticks from me for the girl’s name shortlist!

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 06/01/2018 23:01

It's the female equivalent of the Irish name Brian. Definitely not American.

Lonesurvivor · 06/01/2018 23:03

It's not an American name it's Celtic and existed long before the outlander series and books.
It's a beautiful name but here in Ireland there's a couple of ways of pronouncing it, "Brie na" been the one it'd heard most and prefer if I'm honest.

villainousbroodmare · 06/01/2018 23:48

I really like it. Unless you are from Tarth and likely to have a very tall, strapping girl.

squoosh · 06/01/2018 23:51

It's an Americanisation of an Irish name. The only one I know is American. She is lovely though so it has good associations for me.

ShotsFired · 06/01/2018 23:52

Seems abut lazy, sorry.
Like you couldn't think of a nice girl's name and just went with a daily ugly mans name and bunged an 'a' on it.

(General dislike of feminised men's names though, not as if there is a shortage of girl names)

Bree is nice, but not the cheese spelling!

ShotsFired · 06/01/2018 23:53

Sweet Jesus autocorrect!!

V American

sallyanne33 · 07/01/2018 09:39

There's a famous porn star called Briana Banks. Just saying.

insancerre · 07/01/2018 09:40

I know a Brianna
She mostly always is called Brianna

GetOffTheTableMabel · 07/01/2018 09:43

I don’t dislike it but it will mean a lifetime of explaining how to pronounce it of spell it.
I have an American friend who spells her name like that but pronounces it Bry-Anna

noitsachicken · 07/01/2018 10:31

I agree it sounds Americanised (despite the origin).
I have a Bryony and was worried about her being called Bry, or Brian, but it’s not happened.

BakerBear · 07/01/2018 10:36

It looks and sounds like a female version of Brian which is not a nice name imo.

I do like Brielle though (pronounced Bree-ell)

GreenTulips · 07/01/2018 10:36

Why will people have to spell it say it? It's quite straight forward isn't it.

Lovely

Breesha is another form

itssquidstella · 07/01/2018 10:45

I don’t like it. For me, it conjures up the image of a vapid American cheerleader. Probably unfair!

IHaveBrilloHair · 07/01/2018 10:49

There's a woman on Teenmom2 called it so it makes me think of her

daisypond · 07/01/2018 12:15

I like it a lot. I would always assume it's Celtic in origin, never American. I'm quite surprised people see it as Americna. I don't see it as a feminisation of Brian either - even if it is. It's pronounced differently. Besides, loads, perhaps the majority, of girl names are the female equivalent of a male name. It doesn't make it a lesser name, it's just the female name.

FizzyGreenWater · 07/01/2018 19:53

Not keen at all.

MikeUniformMike · 07/01/2018 19:55

I like it.
