This was my Great Great Aunt's name. From what my nan and Mum have told me, she was a great, kind woman. My nan wasn't brought up by her mother, Aunt Adela brought her up as her own.
It's an old fashioned German name, which is a shortened version of names such as Adelaide. I am considering using Adela as a full name of baby is a girl. Apparently it means noble. It's pronounced Ah-dey-lah. It would mean the world to my mum and especially my nan if we called our potential daughter this.

I was after some honest thoughts on the name. Is it too old fashioned, too unusual, do you hate it, does it sound pretty/harsh/something else?

Thanks in advance!

Love it!

limitedscreentime · 04/01/2018 23:28

I like it! My first thought was you were going for a Adele variation, but as it's a legit name and a family one I don't see where you can go wrong!

Buntysoven · 04/01/2018 23:35

Really pretty... and meaningful. Great choice.

DramaAlpaca · 05/01/2018 01:19

I like the name and that it's meaningful to your family. Good choice.

wooster16 · 05/01/2018 01:22

Beautiful name and meaning.

BrokenBattleDroid · 05/01/2018 01:38

I like it too. Not old fashioned sounding at all - more strong and elegant. Slightly unusual but not stand outish.

Only possible negative would be that not everyone would pronounce it as you do when they see it written down. Adele-ah might happen quite a bit.

ChocolateCrunch · 05/01/2018 06:46

Yes, like it, much nicer than Adele, Adeline etc. Agree with pp re pronunciation though.

AlmostChristmas · 05/01/2018 07:03

I read the title and pronounced it Adele-a. So yes lots of corrections I would think.

Love your pronunciation.

Clare2017 · 05/01/2018 07:26

Lovely!

horatioisabrick · 05/01/2018 08:00

I (as a native German speaker) wouldn’t have pronounced it this way. But I don’t know if that’s something you’d be bothered by?

But it’s really pretty, meaningful and your pronunciations is nice (imo). :)

userabcname · 05/01/2018 08:02

I love meaningful names and Adela is beautiful.

Megabeth · 05/01/2018 08:09

Ooh I love the pronunciation of Adela!

SantaTheChristmasElfSlayer · 05/01/2018 08:09

Thanks everyone. This is really encouraging.

@horatioisabrick just out of interest, how would you pronounce it? My nana is German and she has always pronounced it Ah-dey-lah. Interested to know other ways to pronounce it.

I have a name that is constantly mispronounced so correcting people initially doesn't really bother me. Even after 37 years, I'm still used to people saying my name wrong.

Thanks again!

Sorry, I have no idea how to permanently change my name back after the Christmas name change competition! It keeps reverting to Santa....
