Marcelina and Valentina - too similar?

With this pregnancy I have realised that most of my favourite names for girls end with "-ina"

Valentina, Constantina, Rosalina, Marcelina, Evangelina, Augustina, Serena, Regina, Georgina, Wilhelmina, Katrina, etc.

Every single suggestion I have seems to rhyme with DD's name. DH thinks it's fine so long as they don't have the very same ending I.e. -Tina or -Lina etc but I'm worried about their names sounding too twee when said together.

Yes i agree they're too similar

Navegante · 30/12/2017 09:54

Too similar. What about Marcella?

AlmostChristmas · 30/12/2017 10:01

Yes, too similar. I'm guessing your DD is Marcelina- therefore can't now change to Marcella?!

Valentina is lovely though.

How about ending in ana instead?

Georgiana
Ariana
Liliana
Juliana
Alana
Luciana

Etc...

AlmostChristmas · 30/12/2017 10:03

Though would you lan on shortening their names?

So Marcie and Val? Not so similar now...

Eilasor · 30/12/2017 15:37

Yes DD is Marcelina so can't be Marcella now (although I do still prefer Marcelina).

I will have to give some thought to some -ana names as I do like them too. Thanks for the suggestions, Almost

Marcelina is sometimes Marca/Marcie, sometimes Lina but usually Marcelina. Valentina would presumably develop a nickname too, but I wouldn't want to name a child to preemptively give them a nickname if that makes sense.

Yes. I vetoed Angelina as it was too similar to Valentina, despite loving it. We're thinking Angelica instead.

TatianaLarina · 30/12/2017 20:14

No I don’t think so at all.

My and my sister’s names end in A and their both Ancient Greek. I like names that go together personally.

And Valentina is a very pretty name.

I agree with your husband that Tina and Lina as endings are different enough.

Eilasor · 30/12/2017 22:07

Do you think the number of syllables makes a difference?

I.e. Marcelina and Valentina both have 4, but say Marcelina and Regina or Katrina aren't the same. Or does it make it worse? I'm starting to think it makes it more obvious...

Sorry but I think any -ina sound appears silly and twee next to Marcelena. It might just about work if you have a few other children called Jane and Anne and Bill in between.

Could you consider a variation of some of the names you like? Evangaline, Georgiana or Georgia, Augusta, Rosalind or Rosaleen, etc?

Potteryprincess30 · 01/01/2018 20:00

Valentina please! its so gorgeous

Mum8 · 01/01/2018 21:29

I do think difference is syllables makes a difference, yes
Also if new name starts will a vowel, that also makes a huge difference
So if you like for example Irina, that goes well with Marcelina

One syllable less, a vowel beginning and an r rather than an l with the -ina ending and it is a match made in heaven in my opinion

In this case the similar ending makes them a sweet set of sister names, same family but with unique beginning.

Just my opinion 😊

There are other siblings inc step siblings apart from Marcelina, two single syllable names and a two syllable name tries not to be too outing but they're older, so it would be E.G. Kate, Paul, Eddie, Marcelina and Valentina with age order (as would tend to be said). Which still sounds twee I think.

shatteredandfedup · 01/01/2018 23:28

I think it's fine. They'll spend most of their lives apart from each other. My sibling and I have the same ending and I've ever really thought much about it.

Go with the names you like individually, they don't have to go IMO.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 01/01/2018 23:51

It’s fine but slightly twee, yes.

Marcelina and Katarina, Kristina, Carina, Albertina, Davina, Edwina, Paulina, Thomasina?

DramaAlpaca · 02/01/2018 01:25

I actually think they sound good together, and not at all twee. You'd have a -lina and a -tina ending which I think is fine, and the names themselves are very different so it doesn't matter that they both end in -ina IFSWIM. Sorry that sounds a bit muddled, hope you see what I'm getting at!

TatianaLarina · 02/01/2018 09:31

I don’t think it’s twee at all actually, I really don’t think it’s a big deal.

Twee is Lily-Mae, Peaches, Summer Rose and most diminutives used as first names like Mimi, Indie, Effie, Libby, Lottie and every single yoonique spelling.
