WDYT of Ari for DS? DD has a fairly unusual name and we feel like this really ‘goes’ with her name. Opinions please?

Not keen, sounds like an Eastenders character called Harry.....

BackforGood · 29/12/2017 21:58

dd has a friend called Ari.
the whole world thinks he is called Harry.
He gives up telling them he isn't in the end, and he just gets called Harry in some parts of his life.

Do you have Finnish connections? Isn’t it a Finnish name? I wouldn’t choose it otherwise

Beansmeans · 29/12/2017 22:00

It’s pronounced ‘Are-Ee’

Beansmeans · 29/12/2017 22:02

It has Hebrew and Scandinavian origins

It's a Jewish name. I do like the original pronounciation but unless you write it phonetically or tell people the pronunciation, it will still be Arry.

starzig · 29/12/2017 22:04

Sorry still sounds like a cockney saying Harry

FeelingGuiltyAlready · 29/12/2017 22:04

I like it. The Ari I know is from South America and is in his 40s. It is pronounced arry, exactly like Harry without the H.

GoingRogue · 29/12/2017 22:04

I like it (loved Entourage) but it just sounds like R.E (religious education!).

GoingRogue · 29/12/2017 22:05

What about Arlo or Eli?

FeelingGuiltyAlready · 29/12/2017 22:06

But what about Ayo? That's a great name!

JollyGiraffe · 29/12/2017 22:06

I assumed it was a girl's name when I first read it...as in short for Ariana or Ariadne

GummyGoddess · 29/12/2017 22:07

If you pronounce it Are-ee then it will be spelt wrong. If you pronounce it Arree then it will be spelt wrong.

Sorry, I have a stupid name spelling and I wouldn't lump a child with it as it's a constant lifelong annoyance. Don't give him a name he will have to spell repeatedly for his entire life even if it does sound nice.

spankhurst · 29/12/2017 22:07

I immediately think of Ari Up, punk singer (female). I sort of like it but it will be taken as 'arry by many people.

PinPon · 29/12/2017 22:09

I was at school with a female Ari.

starzig · 29/12/2017 22:17

Said Ayo out loud there and sounded like 1 of the 7 dwarfs lol

eastlondoner · 29/12/2017 22:33

The Aris I know are female. All shortened from Arianne. I think in the U.K most people would assume it was a girl's name.

RavenWings · 29/12/2017 22:35

Like other posters it just sounds like Harry to me, or a shortened version of Arianna etc. I wouldn't be keen on being named it myself.

I'm all for keeping names with their original spelling, but this won't sound unique to many people - just 'arry.

Greenshoots1 · 29/12/2017 22:36

Is this the Ira question backwards?

XmasTreeOhXmasTree · 29/12/2017 23:07

I would think it's a shortened version of Arianna. And there will be a lifetime of 'Harry?' mispronunciations.

BaliBound · 29/12/2017 23:11

I know an Ari (are-ree), he's Finnish but I actually really like it.

AlmostChristmas · 30/12/2017 08:16

Green shoots that was exactly what I thought!

Thanks, a lot to think about. We are thinking of using Ari as a diminutive of a longer name now to give him more options and hopefully eliminate the Harry issue.

I was watching tv last night and they had an American called Arie. He pronounced it "Are-rie".
