I'm really struggling with names for this little one (boy); still a way to go but absolutely love the name Ira "Eye-rah" until someone asks you to spell it and it's I-R-A

Would this put you off?

A few people have said just to add an H on the end or spell it differently but I really hate 'made up' spellings of names!

Any suggestions on similar names to go with Leo are more than welcome.

Sorry on paper that's what it says.

Iyra?
Eyra?

AlmostChristmas · 29/12/2017 19:56

I teach so when I first saw the name on the register (before introduction to the pupil) IRA sprung off the page.

If you don't see it written down it wouldn't matter- it is a lovely name

RedialCallHold · 29/12/2017 21:45

Ira was on my list until I spotted the IRA thing, then also it sounds very similar to Isla so it got scrapped. It is a shame though as I do love the name.

TheCraicDealer · 29/12/2017 22:25

It's a no from me.

Antheanna · 29/12/2017 22:26

NO!!!

Battleax · 29/12/2017 22:28

Ira would be fine if he's at all Jewish. Bit strange on a gentile. FGS don't muck about with the spelling.

SophieLion · 29/12/2017 22:40

I'm Greek and read it as EAR-ra. Ira is the ancient Greek goddess that the English call Hera.

The only Ira s I have known are all (Greek) females.

HoratioNightboy · 29/12/2017 22:45

I've always liked Ira, and the IRA has never crossed my mind in connection with it. As the IRA of most recent memory are pretty much a thing of the past, and Northern Irish history doesn't tend to get taught in schools, I'd say that most of his silbings would not know what you were talking about, and any intelligent adults making the connection would surely just think "co-incincidence" then ignore.

wannabestressfree · 29/12/2017 22:47

I know a baby ira and think it's a lovely old Hebrew name.

Anniethinggose · 29/12/2017 22:49

My best friend was called Ira. A girl, not British, it's short for Irina and quite popular.

1morechance · 29/12/2017 22:50

Eira?

MynewnameisKy · 29/12/2017 22:51

I think it's used quite a bit in the USA. I'm from NI though so it's definitely not used here. 😀

It is important I think to have a name that travels well.

DangerMouse17 · 29/12/2017 22:52

I know one and he spells it "Eirrah"

blinkineckmum · 30/12/2017 07:57

Ira/ ire means 'rage' doesn't it?

thecraddock · 30/12/2017 08:04

Isa?

RosaBaby2 · 30/12/2017 09:20

The name means rage/anger in Latin some other meanings are watchful and 'wild ass' which any child of mine will be.

I'm not using the name but I still love it.

Not keen on Isa, too much like the savings account Smile

My first thought is IRA closely followed by Ira Levin. But I'm west coast Scottish Catholic so it's a no go for me.

ImAMarshmellow · 30/12/2017 09:27

Names that's can't be shortened;

Eli
Jay
Max
Elijah
Ellis
Even
Ewen
Kit
Sean
Abe
Toby
Parker
Tom
Sam
Hugo
Henry
Leo
Levi
Lane
Phoenix

Although there's everychance names will get lengthened Sammy, etc.

But it's a no to the spelling of Ira, use the other spelling(s) but not Ira.

LittleCandle · 30/12/2017 09:49

I didn't think of IRA when I saw the name and I grew up during the 70s. However, Ira, to me, is a dirty, smelly old man, wearing an undershirt and braces, unshaven, chewing and spitting tobacco in the Old West somewhere.

k2p2k2tog · 30/12/2017 10:32

I woudl think IRA too. As a name, Ira is an elderly man running a bagel shop in New York and being spectactularly rude to his customers.

buttercup54321 · 30/12/2017 22:21

I know a 7 year old Ira. It's a fab name. If you love it use it.

JennyOnAPlate · 30/12/2017 22:28

If I heard it I would assume Eira (welsh girls name).

earlylifecrisis · 30/12/2017 22:32

I once taught a girl with this name and she spelt it Eira.

Sophronia · 01/01/2018 22:00

How about Asa?
