When I first heard of Edith Bowman (donkey's years ago) I thought it was really ugly. It was my grandma's name, and it just didn't feel right on someone 10 years or so older than me.
Now that I'm older, I can imagine it being cute on a little girl - but as it fits with the granny chic trend, it may go out of fashion again and be 'of a time' rather than a timeless age iykwim.

formerbabe · 26/12/2017 19:41

Really dislike. I don't mind old fashioned names but Edith is too old lady for me and is quite a harsh unpretty name.

Diddles22 · 26/12/2017 19:46

Thumbs up from me, my DD is Edith

MikeUniformMike · 26/12/2017 20:05

Edie is ok but not keen on Ede

mamaduckbone · 26/12/2017 20:16

I love it - Ds2 would have been Edith if he were a girl. My mum hates it though as we had an ancient Auntie Edie and always says she’s very glad we had a boy!

vitaminC · 26/12/2017 20:20

I actually really like Edith, and especially Edie as a nickname.
Probably because I loved the singer Edie Brickell when I was a teenager!

EivissaSenorita · 26/12/2017 20:21

Panny

ourkidmolly · 26/12/2017 20:22

Loads round here. Edie v popular. It's pretty.

GlitteryFluff · 26/12/2017 20:24

Edith nn Edie is a front runner for this baby when she’s here.
I think I love it then suddenly worry it’s too old lay! Then go back to loving it. So hard to name a person!

kaytee87 · 26/12/2017 20:37

I like it and think edie is a sweet nn

Indigo911 · 26/12/2017 20:39

I really don’t like it but I think that’s because I know a horrible old woman called Edith

Turquoisetamborine · 26/12/2017 20:48

H’s Grandma is called Edith, she’s 95 tomorrow. I don’t like it at all. People up here called Edith tend to get called Edie which is even worse.

meandmytinfoilhat · 26/12/2017 20:55

I love this name, I also love Ethel.

villainousbroodmare · 26/12/2017 20:59

Ugly and fusty imo, but then I don't like Mabel, Ethel, Ivy et al either, and lots of people do.

Bellaposey · 26/12/2017 21:02

Love it. If we're lucky enough to have another girl one day she'll be Edith.

DramaAlpaca · 26/12/2017 21:05

I find it ugly & fusty as well, much too grannyish for my taste. Sorry.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/12/2017 21:20

Don't like it. It's frumpy and harsh. I think it's the 'th' bit that I really dislike

spurtions · 26/12/2017 21:25

Absolutely dreadful, just the worst of the old lady names

BelfortGabbz · 26/12/2017 22:16

I always ask myself if I would like to be called it. The answer is no.

AlmostChristmas · 26/12/2017 22:18

How about Enid- Enie.... just saying

Ohmyfuck · 26/12/2017 22:24

Lovely. Edith. Edie. Both nice.

Fadingmemory · 26/12/2017 22:26

Not to my taste - too "old lady". Eadie?

Lookingtothehighlands · 26/12/2017 22:31

Another person who thinks it’s frumpy and dowdy. In the same category as Doris, Edna etc

clary · 26/12/2017 22:35

I love Edith.

People often say on MN that it's v popular but I know barely any. Not a single one ever in the secondary school where I have taught for six years.

Anyway it's great, strong, unusual yet known, pretty shortening, good meaning, loads of ace precedents (Edward confessor and Harold 's wives, Edith Wharton, Edith Piaf...)

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 26/12/2017 22:39

Love it. I know a brilliant one. It's a good, strong name (see the poster above me thinks the same!) with loads of character. I like girls names that don't end with an 'ee' sound for some reason so the 'th' is a winner for me.
