My 6 month old daughter is called Evelyn. I like her name but I feel like I’m saying it wrong and now every time I say it out loud I am cringing and it’s really making me doubt her name. I’m saying it a bit like ‘Ev-uh-Lin’ when my sister keeps saying it’s Ev-lin (two syllables) out of interest how would you say it and does ‘Ev-uh-lin’ sound wrong to you?

It's my dd's name and I say it the same way you do

Buxbaum · 23/12/2017 16:44

Eev - lin is a boys' name. Your pronunciation is correct for a girl.

BikeRunSki · 23/12/2017 16:48

I think either (eether /eyethr Smile) way is acceptable, but I would say It your way OP, asbitvwasmy grandmother’s name.

seven201 · 23/12/2017 16:56

I've only heard it pronounced Eve-lin. Never heard the ev-lin version. Now I'm worried I've been pronouncing all the Evelyn's I've ever taught incorrectly! Like many names you'll always get someone who pronounces it differently. Tell your sister to stop bringing it up as it's upsetting you. It's a lovely name whatever way you pronounce it.

Imaginosity · 23/12/2017 17:01

This is my name - I say Ev-lin. But there are different ways to say it si just tell your sister which way you prefer.

BenLui · 23/12/2017 17:01

It’s a lovely elegant name. I agree with pps 3 syllables for a girl, 2 for a boy.

She’s your daughter though so your sister should politely follow your lead regardless.

My name is pronounced correctly with two syllables however occasionally I find people trying to shoe horn another syllable in there. It doesn’t bother me overly as long as they get the spelling correct.

Unnoticed · 23/12/2017 22:18

I’ve only ever known it with two syllables.

TidyDancer · 26/12/2017 11:30

I prefer it with two syllables the way your sister pronounces it. Eve-lynn is okay as well. The three syllable pronunciation doesn't come naturally to me, sounds a bit forced. Might be a regional accent thing possibly.

Carouselfish · 26/12/2017 17:28

I'd say Ev er lin. Three syllables.
The older pronounciation is Eev lin though. It's like Mount Everest is actually meant to be Eev Rest but nobody says it like that.

Buxbaum · 26/12/2017 19:00

The older pronounciation is Eev lin though.

The masculine pronunciation is eev-lin.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 26/12/2017 19:11

I have a 5 yr old Evelyn, pronounced ev ah Lyn. I don't mind the ev-Lyn pronunciation but hate it when people call her eve-Lyn Angry

Candyfloss1122 · 26/12/2017 19:28

I pronounce it your way op.

BlackberryandNettle · 26/12/2017 20:53

I say it as you do. Also, you decide how people should pronounce it as you named her! I would also say that ev-uh-lin was the feminine version and eve-lyn the masculine.
