Baby girl due any time soon and we haven’t decided on a name!

She will be of mixed Welsh and Indian (Punjabi Sikh but we’re not religious) heritage and I would love a short name that reflects both if possible?! Any ideas?!

Currently considering:
Nia
Devi
Ani
Saffir
Arian
Asha
Eira
Vina

Sali?

A lot of traditional Welsh and traditional Indian names have Middle Eastern roots. Nihal/Nehel/Nehal for example

Cathays · 20/12/2017 05:59

Loving the tips and suggestions, thanks all. Good point re. Sara, I hadn’t thought of that one.

Nia - Neutral
Devi - Seems to close to Devil and Divvie
Ani - Neutral
Saffir - I like this one
Arian - I only know boys called this.
Asha - I like this, similar to Aisha
Eira - I wouldn't know how to pronounce this
Vin - Not a huge fan of this for a full name?

I have Pnjabi/seek friend called "Mala" which I think is beautiful and it's not too traditional, in face Google says it has Hebrew origins. She pronounces it "Marla" but I hear her parent's pronounce it without the R which equally sounds good. Really love the name.

Mrsknackered · 20/12/2017 09:28

Mabli or Alys any good?

Nia is a bit dated, but I like it. Asha's lovely.

RestingBitchFaced · 20/12/2017 09:38

I love Arwen, but I had two boys so couldn't use it

ColonelJackONeil · 20/12/2017 09:44

I like Eira and as you live in Wales most people will know it and you could get a Welsh speaker to teach you the perfect pronunciation. There are also a few Gwen-Eiras around Snow white. If you like a fairy tale name.

ElizaDontlittle · 20/12/2017 09:49

From your list Asha is my favourite bit people will get the hang of Ani - as they do Ana from eastern Europe - and Nia is pretty too. I think Devi is too close to Dewi and Eira is gorgeous but it would appear to attract a little controversy Xmas Grin - congratulations on your baby girl OP Flowers

Leiqa pronounced Laker is nice.

guineapig1 · 20/12/2017 10:19

Nia
Sara
Miriam
Mia

FizzyGreenWater · 20/12/2017 10:50

Mali?

guineapig1 · 20/12/2017 11:15

Or even just Miri would be lovely

Cathays · 20/12/2017 12:20

Have always loved Miri, Miriam! But they seem a bit too Middle Eastern/Muslim for us as we don’t have any connection there.

I also love:

Rhosyn - but the ‘Rh’ is hard for non-Welsh speakers, I imagine it would get pronounced ‘Rosyn’
Rosma - too Middle Eastern

Enfys, love Nia though

MikeUniformMike · 20/12/2017 15:06

Miri is fun. Literally.
Enfys could have Presney as a middle name

Jazzybeats · 23/12/2017 19:53

I love Eira. Does anyone know if there is a masculine version?

Cathays · 28/12/2017 16:18

@jazzybeats Eirwyn

Eira is beautiful and I know a little Nia which is so pretty too. My sister is Sarita which isn't Welsh but I love it!
If you ever have a boy it has to be Idris! I know both Asian and Welsh boys called this and love it so much!

Brandnewstart · 28/12/2017 16:25

Or you could go Asian first name, Welsh middle name such as Leila Rhosen.

RavenWings · 28/12/2017 17:55

Nia - not for me, it just brings Mia/Tia etc names to mind. Blends in.
Devi - I'm not keen
Ani - meh
Saffir - it's alright.
Arian - seconding that I know a few boys named this.
Asha - meh.
Eira - I've heard it before but still Iwouldn't be 100% confident on the pronunciation of this. Nice name though.
Vin - coq au vin was my first thought

I really liked the Jasmine, Sara and Arwen suggestions.

Suggestions: Anya, Carys, Eirlys, Elena.

MikeUniformMike · 28/12/2017 18:17

Rhosen isn't a Welsh name. It's not even a Welsh word. The Welsh for Rose is Rhosyn. Rh is a welsh letter not the two letters R and H and has a distinct sound. Rhosyn is a bit naff as a girl's name.

Leila is a name of Arab not Asian origin.

BillywigSting · 28/12/2017 18:27

There is a girl in dss class called Varshaa who is the loveliest child.

I like Seren for a Welsh name

Brandnewstart · 28/12/2017 20:05

Sorry mike. Seemed to have pissed you off there. I actually meant Rhoswen and misspelled it.
Leila was my grandmother's name. She wasn't of Arabic descent but she was Asian.
I was actually not suggesting those names, just giving an example.
Really interesting thread for me as my mum is Asian, my dad English and my children half Welsh.

MikeUniformMike · 28/12/2017 21:11

I did think of Rhoswen. It's pretty. It will get mispronounced outside Wales and probably be spelt as Roswyn (God I hate Bromwyn and Bronwyn for the beautiful name Bronwen).
Nice middle name though.
Sorry Brand.
