I’m going round in circles a bit and going a bit baby-name-bonkers in the process!

Would love opinions on these please:

Lewis - concerned it’s considered ‘downmarket’ or that people will assume I’m a huge F1 fan, (which I’m not - dh is, but he doesn’t associate the name with F1 either)
Peter - dated? Dc1 likes it due to Pete rabbit!
Edward - we would shorten to Ed rather than Ted (dh not convinced, but could live with it)
James - I used to love this name, but I keep hearing it where I live (near London) and it doesn’t sound so nice to me anymore
Vincent - Vinnie
Sebastian - dh not sure, as says it’s too many syllables. Dc1 loves this due to the little mermaid Grin

For background, dh chose dc1’s name, so I think I get the deciding vote this time, but obviously we both need to at least like it.

I like Peter and Vinnie (Vincent).

Tinselistacky · 18/12/2017 10:47

Edward nn Nedd
Or Vincent nn Vinnie

userabcname · 18/12/2017 10:49

I vote Peter or Sebastian

WashingMatilda · 18/12/2017 11:19

Really can't stand Vinnie, it sounds very thuggish to me.
Like Ed and Sebastian, would you shorten to Seb?

CaptainChristmas · 18/12/2017 11:30

would you shorten to Seb?

You see, I’m not totally in love with Seb. Though, I don’t hate it either. I think we’d mainly stick to Sebastian, until a nn just happens.

I think Peter is lovely and underused

Rockandrollwithit · 18/12/2017 11:36

I like Peter the best.

LarkDescending · 18/12/2017 11:49

I like most of your choices (though not Vinnie, and I much prefer Louis to Lewis).

Peter stands out, though, as an inspired choice. Strong, classic, ageless, fresh for this generation. I really like it.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 18/12/2017 11:53

I agree with every word of LarkDescending's post :)

PartiallyStars · 18/12/2017 11:59

Your list is very similar to mine except I am not a fan of Lewis or Vincent. I love Peter and don't think it's dated, would definitely consider it strongly for a future boy! I also love Sebastian, and very much like Edward and James. Just FYI every school year round here has one or two James, it's an enduring classic I think.

MikeUniformMike · 18/12/2017 12:20

I love Peter, Edward and James.
Pete is fine, Ed is nice, Ted and Ned not nice.
Jim or Jamie are ok but not mad about Jay.

Lewis is ok but sounds a bit weak.

Vinnie makes me think of Vinnie Jones so is a No. Vince - yuk.
Sebastian is a no. I don't like it or Seb or Basty.

My favourite is James, but it and Edward are very popular so would choose Peter, which is a good strong name.

DiegoMadonna · 18/12/2017 12:36

Lewis - I personally wouldn't care about a name being "downmarket". But I don't like surnames as first names so it's a no from me.

Peter - Yes, dated. And boring.

Edward - It's okay.

James - Of all the "popular/traditional" names, this is one I've always quite liked.

Vincent - I like Vincent but not Vinnie.

Sebastian - Love. Also not a fan of Seb but I would happily have a DS called Sebastian and just use the full name.

Pemba · 18/12/2017 13:00

Peter, Sebastian or James. Edward, nickname Eddie, is fine too. Louis rather than Lewis. Dislike Vincent, it seems to be catching on, but I don't get the appeal.

IJustGotHitByADeer · 18/12/2017 13:20

I love Peter and James, they’re the sort of names that will suit him at all stages of life. But you’ve got a whole list of great names, those are just my favourites.

DearMrDilkington · 18/12/2017 13:22

Vincent.

CakeRattleandRoll · 18/12/2017 14:01

Love Peter and Edward. Lewis is good too.

CaptainChristmas · 18/12/2017 15:10

No, I don’t think downmarket would bother me especially, but I’ve seen a few comments from teachers on here saying it’s a name they might dread seeing on their class list!

My dc1 is quite boisterous and I can just imagine if dc2 has the same personality PLUS a name like that, he’s going to get pigeon-holed as trouble from the minute he opens his mouth Sad. It shouldn’t have to be a worry, but it is.

I like Lewis and James best, they are both lovely. Edward is quite nice. Not so keen on the others

CrestedTit · 18/12/2017 15:56

I really don't understand the popularity of Vincent. The two I know are an old-sweat cockney detective ("Vince") and a sweet youngish French guy ("Van-son"), and "Vinnie" just makes me think of Vinnie Jones.

Love Peter and Lewis is also nice.

The rest are fine - no strong feelings either way.

AdaColeman · 18/12/2017 15:59

They are all very nice, Vincent and Lewis are my favourites.

MollyHuaCha · 18/12/2017 16:12

Lewis - sounds like a surname, reminds me of the shop John Lewis.
Peter - lovely
Edward / Ed / Eddie - lovely
James - lovely
Vincent / Vinnie - no
Sebastian / Seb / Sebby - lovely

MikeUniformMike · 18/12/2017 16:15

I don't get the popularity of Vincent either. I really don't like Vince.
Lewis is nice but I think Hamilton or Audrey Roberts' fancy man.

Names like Elliot and Ezra sound a bit mummy's boy to me.

There are names that teachers will associate with troublemakers.

eggandchips5 · 18/12/2017 16:52

Love Sebastian and Vincent.

Like James and Edward. Love Eddie as a nn but Edward sounds very outdated.

Lewis is a 90s name and is very boring now. I don't like Peter at all- it's quite clunky and old fashioned.

LoveInTokyo · 18/12/2017 19:37

Another vote for Peter, but I think they are all fine names. No clangers there.

Smoliver · 18/12/2017 21:32

Lewis - I don't think of this as a "down market" name. I'm a massive F1 and Hamilton is not first thought hearing this name, but I'd see why you'd have your doubts about this name.

Peter - Still usable today I say and not as common so your boy would be more unique on the playground. I like the Peter Rabbit association, but also there's Peter Pan - two great associations in my opinion.

Edward - I like this name. I prefer the nickname Eddie rather than Ed, but that's just me.

James - I love this name, but I'm with you. I hear it quite a lot where I live.

Vincent - My friend has a son called Vinnie and he's a cute little cheeky chappy.

Sebastian - My little cousin's name. We call him Seb or Sebby for short. We were surprised at first when we learnt his name but it really suits him now.
