What do you think of these names?

My unborn baby is probably a girl, and I didn't think I'd struggle to name her, but I'm really undecided right now. My ideal name would be fairly unusual, but still easy to pronounce and spell, and feminine, but not too "frilly".

What do you think of these names? Do you associate any of them with a particular age group/generation? (I can't find much name data for the UK that goes back before 1996).

Oh, and feel free to be brutally honest. One of my friends has successfully put me off a few names by claiming they sounded like certain diseases.

Antonia
Serena
Selina
Esther
Rosa
Raina
Lila
Nina
Rialita
Marisa
Jacinta

Nina is cute!

horatioisabrick · 19/12/2017 23:37

Antonia, Rosa, Selina and Serena are lovely :)

I think I’d describe my taste in names as similar to yours, though I’m not a big fan of most of the names you mentioned. Mostly because they do sound pretty Sloaney to my ear...Jacinta being a late 90s/noughties woman in a peach firm to me! (Sorry)

I do really like Rosa, Nina and especially Lila. I know a Nina and Lila and they are both very cool creative women.

Similar names I like are: Maud, Cleo, Etta and Wila. I’m also aware that I have a thing for 4 letter names.

Hope you find the right one Smile

*PR firm. It’s been a long day.

ElizaDontlittle · 20/12/2017 09:42

I don't think those 4 are particularly generational OP because they are rare enough. I was at school with a Nina and an Antonia (born early 80s) but there were none of any of them in my huge and very diverse (race/class/area of the country) year group at university.

Marisa is lovely. I know one in her 40s - she is v glam.
I like Rosalie better than Rosa.
Cora? Marisol? Natalia?

FullOfXmasCheerOfCourse · 21/12/2017 21:20

I know a Selina who is in her 50s. It's not a name that I would use.

Saffronwblue · 21/12/2017 21:31

I know a very strong and clever Antonia in her 60s.
I like Serena but always think of the moments she will be having a redfaced tantrum and the mother desperately saying ' calm down Serena!'
I like Jacinta and love Esther. I know a lovely Marissa just to mix it up a bit.

Backhometothenorth · 22/12/2017 14:01

Love Esther - I have a one year old with this name so a little biased Grin

SaturdaySauv · 22/12/2017 14:05

I love the name Rosa. DH less keen so we ended up with an Eva.

cansu · 22/12/2017 14:09

Nina and Rosa. Dont like the others at all.

daisypond · 22/12/2017 14:14

I really like most of your list, except for Lila, Rialta and Raina, and I'm not that keen on Jacinta. I love Selina. I know a couple of teenage Esthers, and also a couple of Rosas and a Nina (all in their early 20s).

blue2014 · 22/12/2017 15:35

I love Esther - I would use it If I ever had a girl (not having more kids)

Cattenberg · 22/12/2017 16:56

If my daughter takes after me, she won't be particularly serene. And I'm very glad I googled "Serena Joy" before choosing that particular combination. The Handmaid's Tale - eek!

It's good that most of these names don't seem to be tied to a particular generation.

Some fab names here. My favourites, which I think are unusual enough to stand out and not date, but instantly recognisable, are Esther (which I love), Nina, Lila, Rosa and Antonia. I also have a soft spot for Selina. I love Marisa but prefer it spelled Marissa.

I'm not a fan of Raina or Rialta - both sound made-up to me Blush though I'm sure they're not, and I think you'd be setting them up for a lifetime of spelling out their names, whereas all the others bar Marisa and Lila don't really have any variants.

Names which I think have a similar feel to these include:

Mariella
Saskia
Cleo
Eva
Isolde

CaptainChristmas · 23/12/2017 10:32

Love Saskia as suggested^^
