I'm only 16 weeks pregnant so could well change my mind but me and dp do not agree on names at all and we had a hell of a time naming ds1. Amazingly we both agree that we love the name Avery and would use it regardless of babies sex. Is this a silly idea? It's not a name I think I've ever heard anyone name their child and I'm worried about bullying.
Also recommendations of similar names would be most welcome!

Yeah as I said, pretty niche.

MikeUniformMike · 10/12/2017 17:37

I think you'll find that offices and postrooms aren't particularly niche.
It's a well-known brand. Just because you haven't heard of it doesn't make it niche.

Google avery and see what comes up.

ShizzleYoDrizzle · 10/12/2017 17:41

I never said offices and postrooms are niche.

This being a brand that is sometimes found in offices and postrooms makes your 'It's the brand name of letter-weighing scales''concerns a little niche.

Thank you everyone for your views.
I was slightly worried about the Aviary/Avery confusion as my mum has a phobia of birds. As in she once ran and left my sister as a baby in the middle of Trafalgar Square because a group of pidgins tried to steal her biscuit... May now have to consider the mental effect on my mum Grin
At least I still have a lot of time left to think about it!

I don't think it is that linked to Aviary. Don't you say Aviary 'A-vee-uh-ree' rather than 'Ava-ree'. No more similar than names that rhyme or assonate (is that a word??) really.

Also don't see why the brand of scales is a probem (agree that's pretty niche btw!) People still call their children Flora and Zara pretty regularly (sure there are more brand name names too).

Doingthebattybat · 10/12/2017 18:07

Another one whose mind goes straight to ‘aviary’.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 10/12/2017 18:08

It makes me think of stationery! If anyone I know called a child that I'd be expecting their next one to be Lyreco.

Jokat · 10/12/2017 18:13

I like it. It reminds me of Jackson Avery from Grey's Anatomy, who is an awesome (fictional) character, and strikingly handsome as far as I'm concerned Grin

Howsthings1234 · 10/12/2017 18:22

I like it, especially for a boy I think as it's unusual but not too crazy.

Kellyturnbull · 10/12/2017 18:35

There is an American actress named Angie Harmon who has three daughters named Avery, Finley and Emery. I’ve always loved those 3 unisex names (especially for girls) but would use them for either sex.
Their names are Avery Grace, Emery Hope and Finley Faith! I love a unisex name with a really feminine middle name or for a boy I would use the name with a really traditional male name e.g Avery Douglas, Avery Robert! love the name :) x

Awful. It's where you keep birds.

SunshineTheMonkey · 10/12/2017 18:45

It reminds me of Making a murderer but that's just me.

ImogenHeat · 10/12/2017 21:14

I think of aviary or Jackson Avery of Grey's Anatomy, where it is a surname. I wouldn't use it as a first name.

DramaAlpaca · 10/12/2017 21:16

Nope, not for me.

As others have said it reminds me of scales, stationery and birds.

Rainbowandraindrops67 · 10/12/2017 23:09

Bird cage to me too

And most definitely a girls name

Ava?
Amy?
Amalie?

All much nicer

17caterpillars1mouse · 11/12/2017 09:51

I would assume female but im aware its unisex. I'm.not a fan of it for either sex to be honest though its just not my style of name

BootyO · 11/12/2017 09:57

Making A Murderer springs to mind for me. Steven Avery is the name of the accused man in that.

Blackteadrinker77 · 11/12/2017 11:02

If you like Irish names what about
Calla
Caitrin
Ita
Blaine

PattyPenguin · 11/12/2017 14:27

Scales and labels.

starkid · 12/12/2017 11:36

I like it, I think of it for a boy could definitely see it being used for either.

teaortequila23 · 12/12/2017 11:46

Love it! Yes!!!!

Kit30 · 12/12/2017 11:51

Like it! Unisex name derived from the same stem as 'Alfred' - meaning is wise or wisdom. Old English/French basis (& character in TV series Nashville) Cool, Not niche or likely to date.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 12/12/2017 12:12

There's an Avery Hill in SE9 (don't use if your surname is Hill)

SantaStuckInTheChimney · 12/12/2017 13:05

It's awful (sorry).
