Having essentially the same name for a boy and girl

Is it weird?

The names are Theodore and Theodora - I love them both but I feel like I'm cheating myself by having essentially the same name for a boy and a girl 🙈. We've been set on Theodore for years.

Boy would be shortened to Theo, Teddy or TJ (the second name will be J, family tradition!) and girl would be Thea (which I love on its own, or even Teddy - depends if she liked it as she grew older).

I also love Seraphina for a girl but DH thinks it's a bit 'out there' - I disagree, but then I'm called Tamara and I'm from a family of non-mainstream names!

I say all this and I'll probably change my mind as the time gets nearer anyway.

My DD s friend is called Jordan. And also would have been if she'd been a boy.

When I was pregnant with DC1 our name choices were either Noah or Norah, so only one letter difference! Can’t see the issue.

DiegoMadonna · 10/12/2017 00:38

Seems a little weird to me that you even think this is a problem in the slightest.

buttercup54321 · 10/12/2017 01:02

Both fine

CharisMama · 10/12/2017 01:05

i know what you mean, I remember thinking at one point that I would use Gabriella or Gabriel. But then I went of Gabriel. And then it was a boy. So he wasn't Gabriella either.

What about Althea?

CountFosco · 10/12/2017 01:11

Absolutely fine. Back in my family there is a William married to a Williamina and they had a son called William. Now that was strange.

I think you may end up disappointed if you use Theodora and then have a boy next. Could you use another name if it's a girl and then use Theo/Thea for your last child regardless of sex?

Reppin · 10/12/2017 05:56

Of all the non-problems on this site, this is truly the most ridiculous.

DiegoMadonna · 10/12/2017 10:33

I think you may end up disappointed if you use Theodora and then have a boy next

But what if she uses Theodore and then has a girl next?

Bue · 11/12/2017 06:08

Diego I just got the impression that she loves Theodore most because she said specifically that she has been set on that name for years, and has an alternative girl name that she loves too. Perhaps I'm wrong.

TatianaLarina · 11/12/2017 09:09

Of course it’s fine.

Rainbowandraindrops67 · 11/12/2017 12:59

Yes I have this with George - a name I love - if I used Georgina which i strongly like but don’t love - I think I may be disappointed if I then had a boy and couldn’t use George again

FarAwayFromLand · 14/12/2017 18:20

Think it's fine. Although how are you pronouncing Thea? The only one I know is pronounced tee-ah rather than th-ee-ah which I presume is your preferred pronunciation if it's short for Theodora?

grasspigeons · 14/12/2017 20:46

I get the dilemma
If you use Theodora then go on to have a boy sibling you cant use Theodore but then if you don't use Theodora and only have one child you never use the name at all
Maybe get a dog to make sure the name gets used.

WaitrosePigeon · 14/12/2017 21:25

I’m an Olivia and my brother is Oliver. Never had any problems.

Reppin · 15/12/2017 05:12

Olivia and Oliver? Really? It sounds like a children's book.

WaitrosePigeon · 15/12/2017 07:17

I suppose it does yes!

CharisMama · 15/12/2017 23:59

That's bonkers! Id find that very odd but I wouldnt say anything.

WaitrosePigeon · 16/12/2017 09:38

I have often asked why they didn’t choose something different but they just said they liked the name. Weirdos!

LovelyBranches · 16/12/2017 11:16

I have the same taste in names. DH said no to Seraphina too.

I have a boy and a girl and our names included Theo for a boy and Thea for a girl. One of our children has one of those names. The other child (first born) didn’t look like that name so we didn’t give it.
