I'm due my second son very soon but we can't find a name we like. We don't really like traditional Arabic names and have looked into names such as Tobias and Mikail however we still don't LOVE them.
Anyone got any suggestions??

Do they need to be Muslim though? Are there any country ties that you could use traditional names from?

I am pregnant now and I am agree boys names are so much harder than girls for Muslim names in the West. It's hard because I want names that won't be mispronounced all the time and as I was born and raised here in England and Arabic is not a language that I speak at all other than a few words here and there, I just naturally usually prefer the Anglicised versions of the Arabic prophet's names. Having said that, I am quite keen for them to have identifiably 'Muslim' names as part of their heritage...I do believe though that a 'Muslim name' can be virtually anything as long as it's not something awful/offensive really, the language that it is in does not make it any 'less Muslim'. It depends whether you want to stick with the Arabic names or anglicise the pronounciations?

Some I personally like that are not anglicised:

  • Jibreel
  • Ali
  • Rustam
  • Ayden
  • Rayhaan
  • Jamal
  • Yusef
  • Yunus

And anglicised ones:

  • Noah
  • Zachariah
  • Gabriel
  • Jonah
  • Joshua
  • Jacob
  • Elijah
  • Samuel

^ Most of those will be read as 'Biblical' or possibly even Jewish names. Not that there's anything wrong with that at all obviously.

My late FIL was a muslim (Abdhul) and he was perfectly happy when we named our son Ben as it was good Islamic name.

Fekko · 27/11/2017 17:56

Half of my family is Muslim and the majority of names are from the classics.

bluesu · 27/11/2017 18:12

Hayyan, Ismael, Faris, Farran are the young Muslim boys I know Smile
