Hi, just wondering how do you pronounce the name Andrey, me and DH love the name and can't agree on any other. I'm scared that we and the child will have to correct people all the time. Dont know what to do. Help, please.

Don't. the y will be changed into an x
Andre is pronounced Ond-ray

DiegoMadonna · 23/11/2017 21:47

It's the Eastern European version of Andrew isn't it? I've only every known Russians/Bulgarians with the name. I pronounce it the same as Andre.

We are Brazilians and the name sounds amazing in Portuguese and in English it is Andrew, but that would be too hard for our families to pronounce. We pronounce it Andre-e.

Just Andre is not an option, we dont really like it and I have an uncle with tha name.

I wouldn’t pronounce it Andre. I would pronounce it An-dray. I had to have a good look at it first though.

LikeMummyLikeDaughter · 23/11/2017 21:58

Yeah that sounds right. Shouldnt have said Andre-e. It is An-dray.

Why don't you use the Portuguese spelling? What is it?

LikeMummyLikeDaughter · 23/11/2017 22:07

Portuguese spelling is Andrey.

LikeMummy where do you live? In England, Andre would be pronounced very similarly to how you pronounce Andrey. More of a y at the end than in portuguese (and obviously with a different R sound)

deptfordgirl · 24/11/2017 01:30

I read it as Audrey, sorry! I would probably pronounce it as And-ree.

MammieBear · 24/11/2017 12:11

Same as above thought Audrey.

TonicAndTonic · 24/11/2017 12:19

I would probably say it more Arn-dray (same as for Andre). But it's not a spelling I've seen before? I've met an Andrej though.

Navegante · 24/11/2017 13:48

I'd assume it is pronounced Ondray. Sorry but I really struggle to understand the difference between On-dray (and why you dislike it other than being a relatives name) and An-dray. The difference is so subtle to my ears that it is almost indistinguishable.

LikeMummyLikeDaughter · 24/11/2017 16:36

Navegante because in portuguese Andre and Andrey sounds totally different. If there is an I at the end instead of Y, Andrei would that make a difference for your guys?
Sorry I'm being a pain, but it is the only name we can agree. Our daughter has a name that doesnt change the pronunciation, English and Portuguese is exactly the same. I really wanted another name like that but it is hard to find for boys.

I don't like the y, i would be better, but he won't be Andrey-e in England and if you're planning to stay I would say no to Andrey or Andrei. Why don't you just call him Andrew? My son's middle name is Andrew, ironically he has a Portuguese first name that is pronounced subtlety differently in England but not enough to be a problem and everyone I've spoken to loves it. But as we live in Brazil he shares his first name with a classmate, so he is just known as Andrew. After explaining how to say it, no one in Brazil has ever had a problem pronouncing it.

howthelightgetsin · 25/11/2017 17:07

Oh I know someone with an Andrey, pronounced the way you said. I actually didn’t know how you spelt it but I always thought it was a nice name and whilst not super usua in the UK it is relatively easy for people to say once you’ve told them how.
