Sophronia · 21/11/2017 22:29

My dad went to school with a Loudon, pronounced loud-un.

tomatopuree · 21/11/2017 22:43

It’s Lou as in plough It’s a name of an area in Ayrshire

There is a castle with an old theme park louden castle. Beautiful grounds.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 22/11/2017 02:05

Ohhh I remember louden castle. They had peacocks roaming about the grounds too

Battleax · 22/11/2017 02:10

I'd think Loo-dn as English pronunciation and Loud-un as US.

Not sure about other UK nations.

TheAntiBoop · 22/11/2017 07:53

I'm English and I've only heard loud-un

Spam88 · 22/11/2017 08:11

I’ve never done across it before but I’d have gone with Loo-DON. Looks French 🤷‍♀️

17caterpillars1mouse · 22/11/2017 08:41

I'd go with loo-don I thought it was a my style of London to begin with though. I don't like it at all

pipilangstrumpf · 22/11/2017 08:50

I’d eat Loo-doh as it looks French, but would happily be corrected

BitOutOfPractice · 22/11/2017 08:52

It's Loud-on surely

BitOutOfPractice · 22/11/2017 08:54

Or really more Loud-en

Like this guy Loudon Wainwright III

BitOutOfPractice · 22/11/2017 08:56

Yep. Loud-en

MammieBear · 22/11/2017 08:58

Loo-dun as it has the same start as Louis and Louise.

AlmostChristmas · 22/11/2017 09:00

I'd read it as Lough- don, as that YouTube clip seems to confirm....

Acrosstheuniverse123 · 22/11/2017 09:04

No its definitely loud-on as in Wainwright.

TheAntiBoop · 22/11/2017 09:17

Louis and Louise are influenced by the i - which loudon doesn't have

bruffin · 22/11/2017 09:19

"Loo-dun as it has the same start as Louis and Louise."

I think the "i" changes the pronounciation.

I instantly thought "Loud en" as in Cloud, loud etc

TitilatedOcelot · 22/11/2017 09:19

I would misread it and assume the child had been born or conceived in London!

Beansonapost · 22/11/2017 09:21

Loudon—- loud-on

It’s my DCs grandmothers surname. She was Scottish Smile

LetsSplashMummy · 22/11/2017 09:21

I'm Scottish so Loud- on (short sounding on).

MissFlashpants · 22/11/2017 09:25

To rhyme with Now-don.

It's a common surname in Scotland.

It definitely isn't Loo-don!

Joeybee · 22/11/2017 09:31

I would say Loo-don, but I'd not know for sure whether it should be like that, or like 'Loud-on'.'

bruffin · 22/11/2017 09:42

Katherineminola

Loudon Wainright is Loud en no loodon

HaHaHmm · 22/11/2017 09:42

Definitely loud-on.

KatherinaMinola · 22/11/2017 12:57

Yeah, bruffin, I remembered that it was pronounced the opposite way from how I always thought it was pronounced. Unfortunately I forgot how I always thought it was pronounced Grin. I only heard it said recently, when I watched a documentary on Rufus W.

Proper pronunciation and a fantastic interview.
