Potential name same as erotica author

Short list of names for baby girl due in a few weeks. Chose one that is derived from a family name on DH’s side. Standard name - think Chloe or Margot. Not exotic or “unique.”

Have just Googled it and found that someone with the same first and last name is a published author of erotic fiction. With lots of links to very embarrassing book titles and the covers all have pictures of women in lingerie.

Do we drop the name? What would you do Confused

If you google any name there will always be some terrible association or embarrassing etc. If you like it, go for it. Most people don't google other kids names so its only if someone is a fan they'll likely know and then probably wouldn't mention it at all

SleepingStandingUp · 20/11/2017 12:53

Oh just re reread and clocked first and surname. Could you change the spelling suitably or the name a bit if its a derivative of another name anyway?

Spamdex · 20/11/2017 12:53

Is it Emmanuelle?

eeanne · 20/11/2017 12:58

I literally said to DH “let’s google and make sure it’s not a pornstar” and lucky us.

It’s not “Emmanuelle” it’s much less exotic than that honestly. Just unfortunately combined with the surname is an exact match for this writer, who has an Amazon page.

I can’t give the actual name for obvious reasons but there’s another author called “Cecilia Lawrence” with similar books. And it’s a name along those lines...not sexy or exotic sounding at all!

Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it. If it's a normal name, people won't think, 'Oh I wonder if she's that erotica author.' Besides which, you've no way of knowing what erotica author names will be used in the next 20 years, which will be more relevant to your daughter. And besides that (!) those names that appear on Amazon are hardly well-known.

So I'd just stick with the name you like and ignore it.

eeanne · 20/11/2017 15:02

Unfortunately DH says now that he knows he refuses to use the name Sad

Jeez. I just googled he out of nosiness. If the other person writes that type of erotica I vote with DH.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 20/11/2017 15:44

Aww that's a shame OP, she's an authoress, not a serial killer !
I'd have another chat with him, if I were you.😄

It’s pretty bad right!

I shouldn't worry.
A friend of mine (who sadly died last week) was being introduced to that there Interwebs by her daughter who googled her name. It transpired she shared it with a prolific porn-star (which one might have guessed was possible given her name was alliterative and the surname could be used as a verb of versatile application).
It did not appear to make the blindest bit of difference to her life!
The important thing (and I know I am in a minority in this) is to have a positive reason why you chose names rather than 'I liked the sound of it'. If you have then you have a bulwark against alternative associations.

Congrats, btw! Flowers

My married name is a glamour model she takes up all the Google pages. Tbh I really like the anonymity. Anyway, no one's going to look at eg my cv and think I'm her!

INeedNewShoes · 20/11/2017 23:52

I had pretty much the same dilemma back in May. When I googled my chosen name for my new DD an actress known for erotica films was the first Google search result.

After I'd brain bleached some of the images that cropped up on that first Google search from my mind I decided to go ahead and use the name on the basis that I could choose another name that is currently 'safe' and in ten years time someone with that name could do something far worse than be an actress and make world news.

This thread prompted me to Google the name again and the search results are already far more varied as an artist with the same name has gained a bit more prominence. By the time DD is old enough to care hopefully there'll be a few other women of the same name who have done really positive things to dilute the internet search results a bit!

Perfectly acceptable names try not to overthink it you will drive yourself crazy.

Dahlietta · 21/11/2017 20:48

Nobody has my name now, quite possibly nobody in the world Star, but before I was married I used to write lame-looking fantasy books for children. Never caused any issues except once an ex-boyfriend texted me to ask if it was actually me Confused

AhWoof · 21/11/2017 20:52

My name is the same as a girl who was brutally murdered as a teenager in the 90s and was all over the news. It hasn’t affected me in any way ever.

Dustbunny1900 · 22/11/2017 17:40

Is it Danielle Steele? Grin. Idk of any other famous romance novelists that the average Jane would know of.
I can think of much worse things , go with what you love. Chances are she will share a name with someone whatever the name.

W1a · 22/11/2017 17:42

I share my full name with a porn star. It doesn’t bother me, and I always laugh when someone says they recognise my name but can’t work out where from!
