They're both good. Hugo sounds posh whereas Theodore sounds kinda steampunk to me. I vote Theodore Smile.

Dauphinoise · 16/11/2017 20:24

I don't like Hugo - far too poncey for my personal taste

I vote Theodore, based on it likely being shortened to Theo. I like Theo

Sirzy · 16/11/2017 20:26

I like both but prefer Theodore

ownedbySWD · 16/11/2017 20:27

Theodore all the way, NN Teddy. I'll never get a Teddy of my own, DH hates the name. Sigh.

TheVanguardSix · 16/11/2017 20:27

Theodore because it's my son's name. Smile He's nearly 16 now!

Hugo is great as well.

Ttbb · 16/11/2017 20:28

Theodore is more flexible. Teddy, ted, Toto, Theo, Dora (if they decide to transition).
Hugo only leaves a choice of Hue and Hugo

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 16/11/2017 20:29

I prefer Theodore of the two.

Moregilmoregirls · 16/11/2017 20:29

Theodore/ Theo/ Teddy is very popular at the moment if that makes a difference to you OP. Personally I prefer Hugo

JoieDeFuckingVivre · 16/11/2017 20:30

Theo for me too!

EleanorXx · 16/11/2017 20:37

Theodore because its my sons name! He's two now and mostly gets called Theo, which he really suits.

BrioAmio · 16/11/2017 20:40

Hugo was almost my son's name!

DH loved Theo, I hate it, Theodore shortened to Ted (Ted Theodore Logan, after one of my film heroes) would be acceptable.

Mulch · 16/11/2017 20:44

Theodore, I like the nickname teddy or toto. Hugo sounds like a name for a dog

newmum7369 · 16/11/2017 20:47

Theodore is nice but I LOVE Hugo. We toyed with Hugo for DS1 who was born this summer but as previous posters have said, we were worried it might be too posh. We thought it was quite a statement name which he might resent a bit if he doesn't turn out to be your typical Hugo. We went for Hugh instead which we love as well.

ChocolateCrunch · 16/11/2017 20:51

Theodore, because I like the nn Theo

pipilangstrumpf · 16/11/2017 20:53

What’s wrong with ‘posh’?

OlennasWimple · 16/11/2017 20:54

Hugo is good if you don't like NNs

Theodore is good if you do like NNs

newmum7369 · 16/11/2017 21:02

Nothing at all wrong with posh @pipilangstrumpf , sorry if I've caused offence Smile

I guess I just meant that we imagined a certain sort of person (stereotyping, I know!) when we thought of Hugo and it seemed quite a bold choice if it didn't suit him in later life. Although of course the same could probably be said for Theodore.

Of course I don't know the OP though an Hugo might be spot on, just thought I'd share our thought process as we loved that name too!

pipilangstrumpf · 16/11/2017 21:05

Oh, ok Smile and no, you’ve not offended me, I was genuinely interested, thanks.

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 16/11/2017 21:07

Hugo is lovely! I have Hugo and Hugh on my boys list, not that we're expecting at the moment Blush
Theodore is alright, but very commonly used at the moment. Ted is cute tho, although I'd use Ted as a NN for Edward.
Not very helpful I'm sure.

averythinline · 16/11/2017 21:21

Theodore- but I'm biased :) we use Theo, lady down the road uses Ted
its a great name, DS also likes sometimes being called Theodore in formal circumstance says it feels grown up..he's 11

stellarfox · 16/11/2017 21:26

Theodore is my favourite. Hugo is nice but I do think of it as very middle class

Joeybee · 16/11/2017 21:35

Hugo is my number one name right now. I just think it has the right balance of cute but strong, it's really underused, and I think it stands the test of time. Theodore was also on my list, but my OH hates it, so I can't use it. I think Theodore is so lovely, I imagine a kind, gentle boy named Theodore. Also the nn 'Theo' is fantastic. So really I wouldn't say either name is better than the other, I think it'd depend on your surname and how the name flows.

Beeziekn33ze · 16/11/2017 21:38

Theodore/Theo.
Hugo always seems to imply that DS is the latest in a long line of Hugo's!

ALS17081982 · 16/11/2017 21:39

Joeybee - what other boys names do you have on your list? Sounds like I have a similar taste!!

I prefer Theodore because it's more versatile and less posh.

I knew a Hugo once and he was so... wispy. Put me off the name for life.
