Scottish names - Fiona and Calum?

ChrisQuean · 13/11/2017 13:18

I'm Scottish and we want a Scottish name for DC3 due in January, but I have lived out the country for 18 years now, so I'm a bit out of touch with name fashions and connotations. DS1 and DS2 have Scottish names and DH has suggested, Fiona or Calum (probably one "l"). I quite like both, but not overwhelmed.

Any thoughts on those two names?

I like Fiona. I love Eilidh but I'm not Scottish and live in England and think it is too Scottish to use if you're not.

Fiona is one of those names that isn't the right era for granny chic - so it's a name people of 35-50 are called so hasn't come around again in popularity (and will in 30 years time). I have just such a name - ie uncool at the time, getting more popular for babies now I'm in my early 40s. I've always liked the fact that it's a familiar name (ie everyone can spell it etc) but equally there was never another one in my school etc. At times as a kid I wished I was called joanne or Sarah but I have been happy with it on the whole.

I think I am alone in hating Eilidh. I just hate how it sounds.

I like Fiona and Calum.

Going to throw Jeanie and Alistair into the mix.

Migraleve · 13/11/2017 19:55

Callum is nice but it must be with the 2 L’s

Fiona is a bit meh

I like Erin for a girl

CannotEvenThink · 13/11/2017 19:57

Oh dear. My name is dull, dated and of the Sharon and Tracy generation Grin.

You definitely don't get many Fionas around these days. Calum is pretty common though, depends how you feel about that. Nothing wrong with either name though. Although I may be biased about Fiona Wink

saltyporridgeandcream · 13/11/2017 20:03

Well, as I have a Calum, clearly I love that name. Whilst Fiona wouldn't be my choice, I don't dislike it - there are just other names I like more. Shona, Isla, for example.

UsernameInvalid66 · 16/11/2017 22:29

My DH is of Scottish descent and has both of these names in his extended family. I like them both a lot, and definitely prefer Calum with one L, which seems to be more popular in Scotland than it is in England.

SuperBeagle · 16/11/2017 23:41

I went to school with a couple of Callums (this spelling), so Calum is familiar without being overly popular. Nice enough.

Fiona is a frumpy, middle aged woman here in Australia. You just wouldn't hear it on someone under 45, or over 65. Not a fan. Also the ogre.

dotdotdotmustdash · 16/11/2017 23:50

Mmmm, either I'm dull and frumpy or an underused classic...

Depends on the day I guess!

ElizaDontlittle · 17/11/2017 02:23

I like Callum and, as mentioned, Alistair, Fraser and Euan.
I think Fiona did have a peak when we were young (80s baby) but I'd not rule it out though I prefer Catriona and Eilidh you don't have any spelling/ pronunciation issues. I even quite like the anglicised kind of Manx cross Eilish/Ailish. I'm sure many will disagree!
Congratulations OP! Flowers

I know Scottish siblings called Fiona and Cameron.

I like Fiona, not so keen on Calum. Or Callum for that matter

daisypond · 17/11/2017 19:02

I like Fiona and Calum. I really like Calum. I know a very cool 20-year-old Fiona. When I first met her about five years ago, I did think it seem a bit dated - it's not a typical name for a 20-something these days. But I do love the sound of it and it is a classic.
