Can I have Beth with an Eliza?

Struggling with girls names. I really like Beth/Bethan but when I told friends they said it was too similar to dd who is Eliza. What do people think?

We also like Jessica so opinions on which you prefer would be great.

Thanks x

No definitely not OP, step away from any 'Beth' options!

It's fine. They sound very different and besides, once they're adults no one will even know what the other sibling is called.

Eliza and Jessica sound fabulous together.

I think Eliza and Bethany would be ok actually (appreciate I'm probably in a minority here!)

Briony / Bryony? Feels similar to Bethany to me.

Please tell me you’re joking?

Thanks everyone. I guess it's just that I've always loved the name Bethan and wanted to use it, plus me and dh are really struggling to agree on anything. This was one of the two we didn't both say no to straight away. Dh really likes jessica but I'm not massively keen. Hmnnnnn. Back to the start then.....

No stay away from any Beth related name. Its alright you saying you'll just use Bethan, but you only have so much control over that. What if she wants to be known as Beth.
I remember an episode on Super nanny. A women had a Marie and a Mary-Ann. Bit odd if you ask me. Its the same name fgs

Jessica Bethany work together as first / second names?

Report
Themummy76 · 09/11/2017 17:35

Just use Beth as a middle name

Holly?
Faye ?

Jessica Beth is nice besides jess sounds a lot like Beth!

It would look as if you were deliberately trying to spell Elizabeth with their names. Bethan would definitely get called Beth.

What about Clara? Similar type of name to Eliza.

Names that have a similar sound to Bethany:

Bryony / Briony (as someone else has mentioned)
Stephanie
Seraphina
Tiphanie / Tiffany
Persephone
Jessamy (could this work, as it's also similar to Jessica?)

Names like Bethan/Beth:

Seren
Karen
Lauren
Heather
Katherine
Ruth
Ethel (only half joking, my nan was called Eth, I don't dislike it as much as others)

Thanks. I really appreciate the feedback and suggestions. Bit gutted that Bethan seems to be out. I'm really stuck for other names we can agree on. For example I also like Ruby and Tess but they got an adamant huge no.

What's wrong with Ruby or Tess?
I really like Tess.
Nell?
Jessica is lovely.
Samantha?

I’m evidently in the minority in that I wouldn’t think twice over two DDs called Eliza and Bethan. It would be a bit weird for them both to be called Elizabeth, but that doesn’t sound like your plan?

Am a bit weirded out by all the people saying they’d think you were strange and unimaginative. Now I’m wondering what people must think of my children’s names (which are AFAIK pretty normal, but maybe I just didn’t think)!

Love Tess.

Thanks fatredcrayon yes I was surprised when a couple of friends said this, hence coming on here expecting lots of ppl to agree with me and think actually it's ok. Glad i did now.

vanguard I love tess and ruby but tess when said with our surname he seems to think sounds like male anatomyHmm and ruby is apparently not serious enough. HmnnHmmHmm it's starting to cause disagreements so appreciate all the comments. Thanks everyone!

FatRedCrayon, people would think it was weird and unimaginative because it is effectively using the same same for two children.

Like calling them Meg and Maggie, or Kitty and Kathy or Eddie and Ned or Harry and Henry or Carl and Charlie or Andy and Drew.

Only even worse, because together they would make the full name.

Is Bethan welsh for elizabeth or a different name?

Bethany is a place in the Bible so not related to Elizabeth but still might sound a bit funny with Eliza especially if it goes shortened to Beth, which it probably will.

Beatrice/Bea goes really well with Eliza and is vaguely similar to Beth

daisypond · 09/11/2017 19:54

Is Ruth any good? One syllable, similar sound to Beth. I think Ruth is a lovely name and is due a comeback.

MikeUniformMike · 09/11/2017 20:11

If you have DD3 and DD4 you could call them Lily and Isabel.
Bethan is a Welsh name that was very popular in 1960s and 1970s so is dated. And the English pronunciation is not nice, sorry. Beth or Bethany are OK though.

Go with Jessica. Jess as abbreviation. Won't date.
