Irida for EN speaking country?

Irida (Greek version of Iris) pronounced EE-Ree-Da

D in da is more like TH in the but in EN countries it will be more pronounced like D

Do you think it will work in an EN speaking country or are there risks for bullying? Do you like it?

Honestly, I wouldn’t. Purely because I can also see the I-ride-a pronunciation. Slightly annoying in primary school - even worse as she gets older.

I would expect most people to try & pronounce the name as either i-rid-a or I(eye)-rid-a unless they are familiar with it.

I adore the name Adrianna said in a Greek accent - so beautiful & flowing. All ad-ree-anna and no ade-ree-arner. It must be hard finding a name that will be pronounced correctly most of the time in both languages - annoying for you (as DH won’t use it) - I think Ariadne would be perfect!

FWIW, the Greek/English couple I know have an Eva.

Santasoittlemonkeybutler when you phrase it like that about reading the name I am worried...
Love the sound of the name in Greek... Would spelling it differently help? Like Iritha or Ireda though that would not be the correct spelling
Ariadne is OK but as it’s used by a cousin and it’s a friend’s favourite (though she will have no more kids) I feel like it is not our name...

I really don’t think you should use Iritha if you are this concerned about the potential for bullying - I find it reminiscent of urethra. But perhaps that is just me!?

Personally I thought Irida (or Ireda) are totally fine.

However, if a bully wants to bully they will always find something! It won’t be the name that gets her bullied, it will be that they want to bully and pick any distinguishing characteristic. I was teased at school because my hair was too long!

BlueBerryIce that is so funny, the urethra bullying potential, guess you are right, there is always something someone can find about a name to bully Grin I could use Ireda in this case I guess as it seems to be the one with the least reasons to bully?

I like Irida, there is something to pick on about any name if you look for it.
People will say it wrong but it should fine once they hear it

Thank you Loveisthelaw. It could be on our list as I love it too. Another one we thought it’s Amaia, not Greek but Spanish though we don’t mind at all, pronounced a-ma-ya. Would that be as nice and without dangers of bulling?
