Beckett for a girl

Am interested in people's views.

For context, we have a dd with quite an unusual, gender neutral name. I'm not necessarily trying to go for that again, we just happen to like this name. We live abroad where it's not too unheard of to have different names. But I know family and friends will not love it....

Does anyone like it or is it too weird/ masculine?

It's not an name. Just a word you like

BertrandRussell · 05/11/2017 01:28

Why does "gender neutral" always mean male?

pioe · 05/11/2017 01:30

I love it! It sounds literary to me.

BertrandRussell · 05/11/2017 01:32

Yes. Samuel Beckett-rhat well known champion of women's rights.

Topseyt · 05/11/2017 01:35

I don't like it. It makes me think Bucket, as someone else already said. I do like Becky, Becca, Bec or Becs though, but then I have a Rebecca who is often known by each of those.

Mrsknackered · 05/11/2017 01:37

Leeds Beckett.

No from me.

Love Robin and Hazel though

RiseToday · 05/11/2017 01:52

I like it. Can't stand Marina though.

mathanxiety · 05/11/2017 02:07

Not bad.

Mind you, I know girls named Sloane, Kennedy, Madigan, Jordan, Hollis, Sheridan, Cameron, Camden, Elliott, Ellis, Hadley, Flannery, Nealey, Bennet and Marlowe.

Not too keen on Marina, but I like Robin and Hazel.

Ifearthecold · 05/11/2017 02:46

As a masculine sounding surname it will be fine if you are in the US, its not the easiest name to give a girl in the UK. Ultimately it is your choice so don't worry too much about others liking it.

ladybird69 · 05/11/2017 03:35

I love it, it’s a strong gender neutral name Smile

Atenco · 05/11/2017 03:54

Call your child what you like, but it is not even a nice sounding surname to my ears.

icantgetnosleep5 · 05/11/2017 07:16

I like gender neutral/ 'boys' names 4 girls. But nt a fan of this one, the sound is quite harsh sounding to me

icantgetnosleep5 · 05/11/2017 07:18

And makes me think of bucket!

AJPTaylor · 05/11/2017 07:26

Do you have a very unusual name op? Because i think if you have gone through life being called lisa, clare, louise or suzanne you need to think long and hard before imposing a name on a child that is unheard of in the context of a girls name and them spending their life spelling and explaining, especially if you dont have a compelling reason.

AvengingGerbil · 05/11/2017 07:39

I would assume you were a Castle fan.

pinkblink · 05/11/2017 07:42

We had it on our list for our son, I love it for either sex though, I also like Haydn for a girl

GoldenWorld · 05/11/2017 07:51

My immediate association is Thomas Beckett, the murdered priest. So no, I don't like it. Your other choices are all much, much nicer.

strugglingtodomybest · 05/11/2017 07:52

I don't like it, it's a surname and it's too harsh sounding. Beckett? Fuck it! Is what she'll get at school.

Neonrainbow · 05/11/2017 07:58

Sounds like bucket. Horrible thing to do to a child.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 05/11/2017 07:59

Marina and Hazel are lovely. Even Robin (though if you spell it like that people will assume boy) is better than Beckett.

There are so many beautiful girls' names out there. Why saddle your daughter (or your son, for that matter, although I know that line of thought is controversial) with a surname?

That's not even a nice word let alone a good name for the poor child...there are billions of actual names in the world and you cant think of a single one you both like apart from that?

Would you.like to be called Beckett?

MissFlashpants · 05/11/2017 08:27

I like it. It’s different but not frilly.

It’s a bit ‘oh aren’t we so literary’ but fuck it, a little bit of pretentious never killed nobody Grin

BertrandRussell · 05/11/2017 08:29

"It’s a bit ‘oh aren’t we so literary’"

I would put money on most people who use the name Beckett for their daughter never having heard of Samuel Beckett!

PodgeBod · 05/11/2017 08:32

The first thought that came to my mind was “try-hard”. I can see the trend you’re going for but that you’re also trying to be unique. It just makes a very ugly name in my opinion.
