I don’t know why but I really like Ethel. Ettie for short. But I can’t get the image of a cute little old lady called Ethel out of my head! Opinions please! :)

I really like it. For me, it was on my short list for dd. But dp said absolutely not, for the reasons people give above.

caffelatte100 · 03/11/2017 07:51

Just no, there are nicer vintage names out there.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 03/11/2017 07:55

If you want an “Ettie”how about short for Juliette / Minette / I’m sure there are lots of others but I can’t think of them!

Ethelswith · 03/11/2017 07:58

I think it's a great name

17caterpillars1mouse · 03/11/2017 07:59

Ethel is gorgeous.

demirose87 · 03/11/2017 09:09

I quite like it but don't think I'd ever use it. But it may be better as a double barrel name.

sundowners · 03/11/2017 09:28

I love vintage names but for me its so incredibly harsh sounding, there is just zero softness, grace, femininity at all. Its sounds like nail scrapping across a backboard to me in its harshness.

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/11/2017 20:14

Ethel is hands downs my least favourite name of the non “unique” variety. Though Dulcie is a close second.

icantgetnosleep5 · 03/11/2017 20:24

Looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove Ethel & Ettie :)

Bratsandtwats · 03/11/2017 20:27

There was a baby Mabel a while ago where I work. Also a Stanley. I think the really old fashioned names are coming back now.

SeasickCrocodile · 03/11/2017 20:28

It would make me giggle (inwardly!). To me Ethel is a witch or a witch’s cat. She’d have to be really stunning to pull off a name like Ethel. Picture a sort of chubby teenage girl with spots called Ethel. It just wouldn’t help. Etta, Elspeth, Edith,Mabel are all nice if you like old lady names.

WanderingTrolley1 · 03/11/2017 20:29

Too old-fashioned.

Kittykatmacbill · 05/11/2017 19:57

I like it, but dd2 name has been heavily reference through out. Also like Greta, Agnes and Maud,if that helps!

Honestly they aren’t old lady names they are baby names, it does mean that my granddaughter will probably called carol or brenda or something...

Hayley0509 · 07/11/2017 22:00

My mum is Yvette shortened to Etty

Katanna · 07/11/2017 22:21

Etty is nice.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 07/11/2017 22:27

Your baby your name.
But if you want my brutally honest opinion it's a horrible name. (Sorry any Ethel's out there.)
An old work colleague of mine called her child Bethel, which is nice.

heron98 · 08/11/2017 09:38

It's hideous, I'm afraid.

cakesandphotos · 08/11/2017 14:39

Ethel is amazing! Love it and names like Edith, Sybil etc (all vetoed by DH sadly) plus she won’t be one of 4 Ethel’s in her class so that’s a bonus

ArcheryAnnie · 08/11/2017 14:54

I love it!

TheVoiceOfTreason · 08/11/2017 20:36

Some really harsh comments on here! 🙈 It really doesn't float my boat at all (Ethel, that is. Ettie is an ace name), in fact it's firmly in the "ooooh NO!" camp for me, but I wouldn't be harsh enough to call it "hideous".....

Orlandointhewilderness · 08/11/2017 20:43

i love it. it is firmly on my list if number 2 ever comes along.

RedastheRose · 08/11/2017 21:50

No i wouldn't, definitely old lady name.
