What does everyone think of this name?

To start with I don't think it's ever a good idea to use a nickname as a name, as babies grow up to be adults.
Lolita is the baby name for Lola.

Then the book/film.

Just no.

If you really want it, call her Lola, as suggested, and use Lolita in a family context.

Ktown · 26/10/2017 07:40

I wouldn't because of the book.

It is just too famous.

pipistrell · 26/10/2017 07:57

Does no one read anymore?

ZuzuMylittleGingersnap · 26/10/2017 08:58

For me (mid-40s), although Lolita's a pretty name, the Nabokov stigma and automatic association would make it a no-go.
But interesting to see if that'll still affect current generation of parents' name choice.

Would also be interesting to hear from Spanish/ Latin countries' MNers if Lolita is still a common shortening of Dolores where they are, despite the book/films?

I realise Lolita is a further shortening from " Lola", yes, but Dolores (as mentioned above, I just wouldn't ever have used Lolita myself) could be what's actually on the BC, and used as well (or when older).

Big Japanese sub-culture of fashion, also. So could anyone tell us if there's been a resurgence of using the name there?

FlowerPot1234 · 26/10/2017 09:10

Oh shit sorry didn’t realise it was a book

Shock
Weedsnseeds1 · 26/10/2017 09:20

You could use Humbert for a future son as well!

BernardBlacksHangover · 26/10/2017 10:09

Ugh NOOOOO! For Humbert Humbert related reasons already mentioned. Fucking grim.

BernardBlacksHangover · 26/10/2017 10:11

I read the book when I was about 18 (in the early noughties), so I imagine people will still read the book and definitely be put off the name if they do.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 26/10/2017 10:12

Lolita was short for Dolores anyway.

But how can you not have heard of the book?

NinonDeLenclos · 26/10/2017 10:14

This. Shock

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 26/10/2017 10:38

How about Loretta/Lottie/Etta.

Roxx1516 · 26/10/2017 13:02

What about neeta

Branleuse · 26/10/2017 13:05

I wouldnt use it because of the paedophile connotations, but I didnt realise it was a diminutive of Delores. Delores is an amazing name

Branleuse · 26/10/2017 13:08

dolores even

FilledSoda · 26/10/2017 13:12

Okay , so assuming you haven't read it , did you not wonder why it has such sexual connotations ?

Lweji · 26/10/2017 13:14

I haven't actually read the book or watched the movie (not in full), but I do know what it's about. Which is one reason I never felt compelled to read or watch either.

It's common knowledge.

Branleuse · 26/10/2017 13:22

I havent read it either. I tried to once, but it was just uncomfortable

BernardBlacksHangover · 26/10/2017 14:07

It is a horrible book imo. I have no idea why I read it. The all boys grammar in our town studied it for a-level English lit and also the movie came out a few years before I read it, so I had a vague idea of what it was about. I didn't realise how bad it would be it how young the character was until I read it. I kept waiting for HH to get his comeuppance, but he doesn't (I don't think? Was a while ago that I read it). Not a comfortable read at all.

I never actually saw the movie, but imagine it's grim too!

RatRolyPoly · 26/10/2017 14:10

Evita?

PineappleSnapple · 26/10/2017 14:13

Reminds me of a paedophile's victim.

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/10/2017 21:22

Even if you haven’t read it, how can you not know it is a book? A very famous, very controversial one.

As for using the name? No, absolutely not if you live in an English speaking country.

stellarfox · 26/10/2017 22:01

I wouldn't use it unless where you are from no one has heard of the book! Stick with Lola or you could even go with Dolores nn Lola/Dolly.

Mrsknackered · 26/10/2017 22:22

Maybe Iris, if you're going for a lesser known exploited child's name. ( taxi driver)

You cannot call a child Lolita

Caprinihahahaha · 27/10/2017 02:59

I haven't read the book but you have have lived in a cave to not get that Lolita and child sexual abuse are synonymous

NikiBabe · 27/10/2017 03:25

Oh yeah Aryan was ridiculous!

Confused

Aaryan is actually an Asian boy name. I know an Aaryan of Bengali origin. Pronounced the same way.
