I never hear this on babies/children anymore. Is it too dated?

I like Claire (although I slightly prefer the English spelling, Clare, to Claire, which is French). It would be unusual now, and it's nicer than Clara. Simple nice sound and lovely meaning (bright or clear). Relating to that, Saint Clare is the patron saint of television - I think because she saw visions.

It's much nicer than some of the names that are fashionable now, eg Isla, Florence, Ivy.

florapearl · 24/10/2017 17:06

It isn't to my taste. It is very 80s. It is not really an Emma or Sarah name but a name like Lisa, Kelly, Lindsey - very plain and quite pedestrian.

Claire is just so - average.

DeadDeadDeadRose · 24/10/2017 17:06

I'm a Sarah and while I like my name, there are indeed a billion of us in our 30s. I'd be very surprised to see a toddler called Sarah, Claire too seems very 'of its time'.

DeadButDelicious · 24/10/2017 17:16

I'm an Emma. And like the Sarah above me! I do like my name but it is very common amongst women my age.

I like Claire, it's a nice name and would be unusual amongst all the Olivia's, Grace's, Eva's and Ella's.

PandorasXbox · 24/10/2017 17:20

It’s so not 80’s. Danielle, Stacey, Chelsea are 80’s names. All the Claire’s I know are in their fifties.

florapearl · 24/10/2017 17:30

There were absolutely loads of Claires at my primary. I was born 81 Smile

clary · 24/10/2017 17:30

My middle name is Clare (hence my user name, partly) it's ok, a bit dull but I think my parents wanted to balance my unusual first name.

I know a lot of adults in their 40s called Clare/Claire, so much so that if someone rings me with "It's Clare," I have to let them talk a bit longer to see if they are DS's teacher, football club secretary, DD's mate's mum etc! So on that basis, it's a bit early for a return - like Karen, julie, Tracey, Nicola.

That said, DD has a yr 11 friend called Clare, she is really lovely and bright and sweet; there is another Clare in her class actually, also a nice girl.

florapearl · 24/10/2017 17:32

here

No 6.

Notalitigator · 24/10/2017 17:36

I've always found it to be quite a dull name much like Rebecca and Kelly. But, it is somewhat refreshing compared to all the Evie's and Sophia's around my way.

formerbabe · 24/10/2017 17:39

Emma is still a lovely name imo. Sarah is ok. Claire does sound very dated to me.

Twofishfingers · 24/10/2017 17:44

I would prefer Clara to Claire, and Ella to Emma. A bit more now, not so much 80s. I love Sarah but DH's first girlfriend was called Sarah so he vetoed it!

OlennasWimple · 24/10/2017 17:56

Claire is a 70s name that will probably come back when the current crop of Claires are grandmothers (like Ruby and Ivy did)

Emma never went away and has been with us for over a 1000 years, so is here for good I reckon

Sarah is a Biblical name that is timeless, in all its variations (Sara / Zara etc)

bookworm14 · 24/10/2017 18:01

It’s very 1970s/80s to me. Quite popular for babies/small children in America though. It’s funny how names trend at different times in different countries; Americans think it’s weird Jessica is still so popular in the UK, as to them it’s the ultimate dated 70s/80s name!

leghoul · 24/10/2017 18:05

I think it's a very pretty and unusual name for a baby now. Not too dated and nice Latin stem.
There will no longer be a class of Claire J, Claire H, Clare B, Claire B etc.

ricecakeseverywhere · 24/10/2017 18:08

I think Claire is dated - sorry. Very 80s

Clara is nice?

BertrandRussell · 24/10/2017 18:11

In a world where boys are called Albert I don't know how anyone can call a name dated!

Clare is lovely. Simple, classic but very unusual.

Mishappening · 24/10/2017 18:13

Why not use it in the French way, as a hyphenated name? - Marie-Claire, Jennie-Claire etc. I think that sounds lovely.

letsmargaritatime · 24/10/2017 18:25

Beautiful

NotAgainYoda · 24/10/2017 18:27

I agree with Olenna

But I think Claire's a nicer name than some of it's contemporaries - like Tracey (I might be biased as my best friend at Primary school - in the '70s - was Claire)

NotAgainYoda · 24/10/2017 18:27

its contemporaries

Minstrelsareyum · 24/10/2017 18:32

Agree with BertrandRussell, how can Claire (beautiful name) be dated when you have millions of Violets, Avas, Olives, Evies plus all the Alfreds and Arthurs on the boys side. Go for it! Love Sarah too!

SardineJam · 24/10/2017 18:34

I think it's a really pretty name. I went to school with 3 Claire's and they were all really nice girls.
DS1 has a name that most late-30yo men have and people are often surprised by his name because its so uncommon now but is still a very "normal" name - only one in the whole school, makes labelling easy!

BertrandRussell · 24/10/2017 18:46

44 Claires and 4 Clares last year. So perfect. And much more uncommon than a lot of the youneeque names people go on about!

wobblywonderwoman · 24/10/2017 18:49

I think it is a fine/classic name. There are much nicer names though.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 24/10/2017 18:49

I love Clare - much prefer it to Claire for no reason!!
