How would you pronounce...

...Evelyn?

I love Ev-lin but not so keen on Eeev-lin/Eve/Evie or any other variation.

Will I constantly be correcting people on the pronunciation of DD2’s name?

Ev-eh-lin.

I've never heard it pronounced eev-lin or ev-lin in Australia.

BernardBlacksHangover · 21/10/2017 20:58

I thought that the eve-lyn pronunciation was for boys (like Evelyn Waugh) and ev-lyn or ever-lyn was for girls?

This^^ is what I thought too.

Badgoushk · 21/10/2017 21:00

Ee va lyn

Montacute · 21/10/2017 21:12

Whether there's an official pronunciation depending on whether the Evelyn in question is male or female is kind of irrelevant. The fact is that female Evelyns (can't imagine too many male Evelyns are being born these days) are as likely to pronounce their own name eeva-lin and evva-lin. I know several young and old female Evelyns and it's evenly split as to how they pronounce it.

Redyoyo · 21/10/2017 21:52

I would say ev-lyn. I'm not getting where you get a Ever there's no r.

GinIsIn · 21/10/2017 21:58

I thought the same as Chaffinch too

TidyDancer · 21/10/2017 22:19

I’ve known a few Evelyn’s and have never heard it pronounced ever-lyn, really don’t like it pronounced that way tbh. Eve-Lyn or Ev-Lyn are nice though.

Sophronia · 21/10/2017 23:00

Ev-uh-lin if for a girl, Eev-lin for a boy.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 21/10/2017 23:03

For a boy or for a girl? It's a unisex name.

Anyway, I like Eve-lin for either.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 21/10/2017 23:08

I have a 5 yr old Evelyn. We pronounce her name ev uh Lyn it is sometimes mispronounced as eve-Lyn by not very often.
It's a lovely name. We always get comments on how pretty it is.

ButtfaceMiscreant · 21/10/2017 23:09

We have an Ev-e-lyn. I am not keen on Eve-lyn (just personal preference) and I believe it is the traditional male pronunciation, but I detest Ev-lyn which is how some relatives pronounce it (despite being told). I silently grit my teeth and just slip up occasionally with their names petty, moi? Grin

It is a gorgeous name though, and pretty when written down as well.

Eve-linn. You can’t control how folk will say a name,so if it’ll irk dump the name

turquoise88 · 22/10/2017 08:02

Thanks all. For those of you asking whether it’s for a boy or girl, you’ll notice I said DD in my original post.

I’m finding it hard to know the difference between Ev-lin and Ev-uh-lin though. Surely if you say it at a normal speed it’s basically the same?!

Again, thank you for opinions, it’s been really helpful.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 22/10/2017 08:45

Evelyn doesn’t have an r in it.

No - but the second "e" could be a schwa which is pronounced "uh"

Mum2OneTeen · 22/10/2017 08:51

Ev-ell-lin

BernardBlacksHangover · 22/10/2017 08:53

I noticed you'd said it was for a girl op. But, I thought it was always ev-uh-lin/ ev-lin for a girl. Eve-Lin for a boy.

BoredOnMatLeave · 22/10/2017 08:56

Where are you from OP? Just out of interest, as when I say Ev-lin and ev-uh-lin they are very different. I'm south east and would say Ev-uh-lin

lljkk · 22/10/2017 09:12

"I’m finding it hard to know the difference between Ev-lin and Ev-uh-lin though. Surely if you say it at a normal speed it’s basically the same?! "

Er, no, not the same. One has 2 syllables & other has 3 syllables. (My 95 yo Aunt is Ev-lin).

scroogem · 22/10/2017 11:58

I did always assume that Ev-lin was just people saying Ev-uh-lin very quickly. Whereas Eve-lin is like a whole different name.

DiegoMadonna · 22/10/2017 12:00

Except that Ever-Lyn is a different name altogether - Evelyn doesn’t have an r in it

I assume the people saying "ever-lin" pronounce ever as ev-uh. (where the second syllable is a schwah as mentioned by a PP). They are wrongly assuming that everyone pronounces ever this way, which can get quite confusing.

Basically, mumsnetters aren't very good at spelling things phonetically.

ShowOfHands · 22/10/2017 12:08

I think we need a disclaimer on all threads explaining the difference between rhotic and non rhotic accents.

Non rhotic accents pronounce ev-uh and ever the same way.

Basically, mumsnetters aren't very good at spelling things phonetically

Not a MN thing at all. Just an accent thing.

MikeUniformMike · 22/10/2017 13:38

I'd pronounce it Eevlin

HoratioNightboy · 22/10/2017 14:23

I think it also depends on where you stay, OP. From previous threads it seems to be mainly Ev-lin in Scotland, and either Eev-lin or Ev-uh-lin in other English-speaking places.

Eev-lin seems to be pretty consistent for boys though, wherever you are.

UsernameInvalid66 · 22/10/2017 20:31

I've known one Ev-lyn but a lot more Eev-lyns (all female). I'm not sure which I prefer really.
