Or Ailbe for a boy.

thank you for all the lovely inspiration! And thank you for being supportive about using family names :) ...I'm a long way from home (although not as far away from home as my DH) and the thought of having a link to my fam just helps ease the homesickness (...shame same cannot be said for esing the -morning- all day/all night sickness lol)

I have 13 nieces and nephews, many of whom have proper Irish names (as opposed to Anglicised variants) and many of my cousins' chidren have too.

So it's a narrow selection from which i can choose!

I've relinquished Saidbh, unfortunately. My DP is a Londoner, so it needs to be something he can easily spell and pronounce.

Current front runner for a girl's name is Ciara. I also really like Niamh.

No male lead, but we both kind of like Ronan and Liam.

CiderwithBuda · 22/10/2017 21:54

Kathleen must be due a revival. My gorgeous nana was Kathleen. Or Aunt Ka.

Unfortunately I don't think it will revive just yet.

SallyGardens · 22/10/2017 21:56

"Cáitlín" (with the fadas) is the Irish spelling and pronounced "Cawtch-leen".

MollyCule · 22/10/2017 22:02

I like Kathleen, personally would go with Kitty as nickmame but also really like Katie. Bridget is kind of in the same vein isn't it, nn Bridie. I also like Honor which I guess isn't really Irish but was popular in previous generations.

ShangriLaLaLa · 22/10/2017 22:02

Kathleen’s aplenty on both sides of my family. Lovely.

It was right up there on our list, along with Caoimhe.

katseyes7 · 22/10/2017 22:09

l'm a Kathleen and l've always hated it. Shortened it to Kath when l was 18.
My youngest stepson is Ciaran, which l love, and if we'd had a boy we were going to call him Danaan. (OH's parents are lrish).

mathanxiety · 22/10/2017 23:57

Honor was really popular, as was Honora, often shortened to Nora.

Haudyerwheesht · 23/10/2017 00:05

I don't like Kathleen tbh because here it's more of an old lady name like Janet or Marion, it's not a sort of one I'd like for a wee girl nowadays.

Names I like :

Girls
Ailish / Ailis / Eilis
Mairead (my absolute fave)
Saoirse
Niamh (vvvv popular here)

Boys
Darragh
Ciaran
Fergus
Fintan

BriechonCheese · 23/10/2017 00:06

I like Kathleen too.

Other names I like, including my own

Eithne
Mhairi
Aoibhin
Meabh
Nuala
Caoimhe

Daithí
Fiachra

nameohnameohname · 23/10/2017 00:09

Einin for a girl, Daegan for a boy

Wh1stles · 23/10/2017 00:16

Clodagh
Maeve
Siun
Fraoch

Diarmuid
Daithi

Littlebatcalledlucille · 23/10/2017 00:21

I have a
Sean, a Padraig and a Bridget, (I came for the names too)

I like Kathleen but I don't know any

Littlebatcalledlucille · 23/10/2017 00:23

I Love Caoimhe!! But my cousin has stolen it.

MayFayner · 23/10/2017 00:25

I'm Irish and there's a lot of non-names on this thread Shock

If you are thinking of an Irish name check and double check the spelling (yes, there may be several accepted spellings but it's not just a complete free-for-all), and check whether the name is in fact a surname or if it exists at all

ladybirdsaredotty · 23/10/2017 00:29

I love Caoimhe so much! And also Aoife (my dad is Irish). Unfortunately DP used his power of veto!

OpenThePickles · 23/10/2017 00:46

I agree with you MayFayner. I'm Irish and am baffled at some of these names. Isn't Linus a Greek name?

cuirderussie · 23/10/2017 00:56

Yes, several of those names I've never heard of or are spelled wrong. And Mhairi is Scottish, not Irish. Hmm

mathanxiety · 23/10/2017 01:44

Yes indeed, MayFayner.

(Mairi is the nominative).

seriously!

Fraoch????

Themummy76 · 23/10/2017 08:51

How nasty are the pp who have just poo pooed other people’s names but not suggested any of their own?!

BriechonCheese · 23/10/2017 10:19

Mhairi is indeed Scottish, as are my MIL, SIL and best friend with that name. My autocorrect is a bastard, probably because I type that name daily. Do forgive me and please don't make me relinquish my passport or my Leaving Cert.

MayFayner · 23/10/2017 10:21

It's hardly nastiness.

Really Hmm

Jedbartletforpresident · 23/10/2017 13:23

I don't know about there being "a lot" of non-Irish names on this thread - there are the three mentioned above - Linus is definitely Greek (it was my name of choice for DS1 but DH vetoed it), Mhairi is Scottish but has been explained as an auto-correct (easy done), and Fraoch is a Scots word - there's an island in the Hebrides called Fraoch Eilean, but there could easily be a similar word in Gaeilge as the two languages have many similarities.

I wouldn't class that as "a lot" of non-Irish names however. What are the others? Genuinely curious
