Hi, my husband and I are stuck for a name for your second son. Our first is called Yori James Jones and we want Gareth as the middle name for our second son but can’t agree on a first name, we are looking for something welsh and I like these,

Hedd Gareth
Tomos Gareth
But he doesn’t think they sound right.
Can anyone help with some suggestions.

Rhodri or Owain

Yori is not Welsh. Iori is.

Christinejones · 16/10/2017 21:36

Yori can be spelt with an I or a Y because they can both be said the same. It took a long discussion with my sister who is a welsh lecturer before we decided on that. Iorwerth can be spelt Yorwerth as well.

I think Hedd Gareth goes well when said by Welsh speakers, My concern would be that English people would pronounce his name as 'head'.

Christinejones · 16/10/2017 21:40

Ye that is my only concern as well but I live in Wales in a welsh community so I’m hoping that it won’t be to much of a problem. Yori hasn’t been an issue yet but he is only 2 so it could happen when he goes to school even though they would be going to welsh schools.

Y and I are not pronounced the same. I don't know what sort of Welsh lecturer your sister is but Y is never pronounced the same as I in Welsh.

MikeUniformMike · 16/10/2017 21:48

I can see why you spelt it Yori . Yorwerth is just not right - it is the anglicised form.

Christinejones · 16/10/2017 21:52

I’m not arguing with you over the pronunciation of my sons name. But try saying these words out loud. Ymyl, Ystyr, Hyd. All of these give the e noise when pronounced the same as i.

Ymyl - similar to English Ummil
Ystyr - Ust-irr
Hyd - no equivalent English approximation

MikeUniformMike · 16/10/2017 21:57

Yori I guess would be pronounce Yorry, just like Iori. No argument at all.

Yorwerth is a south walian surname pronounced near enough 'You're Worth'.

MikeUniformMike · 16/10/2017 21:58

pronounced not pronounce

Hedd or Geraint gets my vote!

Christinejones · 16/10/2017 22:03

All you seem to want to do is knock me down so go for it. All I wanted was an opinion on a name for my new son not your opinion on my first sons name. Like I said earlier I live in a welsh community and he goes to welsh school and everyone has pronounced it correctly and not felt the need to tell me I’m wrong when that’s all you seem to want to do. Also nobody else on this thread has mentioned anything to do with his name so why do you feel like you have to police the way I spell and pronounce my child’s name!

Christine, I'm not policing how you spell it or say it. I also like Hedd very much.

MrSlant · 16/10/2017 23:13

Or you could do that very Welsh thing of calling your child something like Gareth Wyn (I know approximately eleventy million of these so maybe something else but it's a good example) then calling them by the second name. Gareth, to me in a Welsh speaking community with very traditionally named children is a first name that gets ignored in favour of the second name. I don't know why though.

Love Yori/Iori as well, gorgeous name. Also love how people will argue the language with you when village by village the Welsh language is different never mind the North/South divide.

um, you couldn't be more wrong! Are you sure your sister speaks Welsh?!

Hedd Gareth I think is a bit clunky, though Hedd is lovely. I think Gareth needs something longer at the front? Two syllables at least.

Meredydd
Talfryn
Teifion
Mabon
