What are your thoughts on Essie (thinking of as a shortening for Elspeth). The mail varnish brand association doesn't bother me in the slightest. So thoughts?

My first thought was Esso unfortunately. I love Elspeth though!

VivienneWestwoodsKnickers · 15/10/2017 18:53

Essie would be made into Nessie in the playground.

I associate Elspeth with the cartoon "The Family Ness" from my childhood. But I actually really like the name!

AnyaMoondial · 15/10/2017 20:33

I love the name Elspeth, it is wonderful. Essie is a cute nn.

bridgetreilly · 15/10/2017 20:36

Elspeth is lovely. Could also be Elsie?

HoratioNightboy · 15/10/2017 20:56

Essie is one of the historic shortenings of Elspeth so prefectly fine to use it like that. But it looks like Essie has become a name in its own right recently - some of the websites are listing it as a French name derived from Estella. Not that they're always accurate about these things...

Other traditional shortenings for Elspeth (in Scotland at least) are/were Elsie, Elspie, Elspa, Eppie, Epps and Nepps. Any use?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/10/2017 21:33

Elspeth is lovely, I think Essie/Ellie, are fine as nick names.

Allthecake · 15/10/2017 21:44

Elspeth is lovely, prefer Elsie to Essie but there’s nothing wrong with it! And the Family Ness was an awesome cartoon!

SuperBeagle · 15/10/2017 22:03

I would assume an Essie would short for Estelle or something similar. I'd assume and Elspeth would be shortened to Elsie...

I like Essie, but don't like Elspeth.

AtSea1979 · 15/10/2017 22:05

Sounds wrong to me, like it's missing a first consonant. Like N or B or something.

stopbeingadramallama · 15/10/2017 22:06

I thought Esso.

It’s not the worst, but it seems like there’s something missing.

Tigertots · 16/10/2017 09:42

I didn't realise Essie was short for Elspeth; I assumed it was derived from Esther or Esmeralda.

It makes me think of the little fainting pupil in the superb Anne of Green Gables: the Sequel; I thought Essie was sweeter than her more prominent pal Emmeline.

CabernetSauvignyoni · 16/10/2017 10:01

I did instantly go to nail varnish, but if you're ok with that then it's a sweet nickname and Elspeth is lovely!

PandorasXbox · 16/10/2017 10:02

I’m not keen sorrry. Essie and Effie aren’t pleasant soundings names imo.

Montacute · 16/10/2017 13:13

I think Essie is really cute but would prefer it as a shortening for Estelle/Estella. Elspeth doesn't really do it for me. Old churchy Scottish woman's name.

KoalaD · 16/10/2017 14:10

It's a bit...unfinished? Hissy?

I do like Esther, but not Elspeth.

TempStamos · 16/10/2017 14:16

My friends Dd is called Elspeth, lots of people hear Elsbeth and have started calling her Beth at school. I love the name Essie though.

overmybreadbody · 16/10/2017 14:16

I just think of the nail varnish Blush

MyOtherProfile · 16/10/2017 14:17

Nobody watch Holby? I'm put off it by Essie in Holby.

Ohmyfuck · 16/10/2017 14:22

Essie is a cute name. (As long as she doesn't turn out to be messy?)

Ploppie4 · 16/10/2017 14:24

LIke it

Ploppie4 · 16/10/2017 14:24

There’s also Bess

Stringofpearls · 16/10/2017 14:25

Yes the nail varnish does spring to mind, but lots of other names are used for brands too. For example Zoe (a Renault), Maria (biscuits) and Henry/Hetty (hoovers). If you love it then I say go ahead, I think it's quite pretty.

burninghigh · 16/10/2017 19:58

It's pretty.

buttercup54321 · 16/10/2017 22:21

Esso springs to mind. Have you finished your essay Essie?. Wouldn't be my choice!!

IHeartKingThistle · 16/10/2017 22:25

I thought it was one of the Ghanaian days of the week names. I think it's really pretty.
