Torin?
To rhyme with 'foreign'?
Or with a longer vowel sound, so like the 'Taur' in 'Taurus'?

I'd say a short Tor like in foreign.

xqwertyx · 15/10/2017 12:39

Torin is sounded like foreign and i prefer it.

Tourin to me sounds like ‘touring’ but said lazily with the the ‘g’ left off.

whiteroseredrose · 15/10/2017 12:40

Also to rhyme with foreign

xqwertyx · 15/10/2017 12:41

Dont know how much you want the ‘i’ to sound but Toren also looks nice.

DiegoMadonna · 15/10/2017 12:41

I would've instinctively said it like tourin', but now that I've read this thread, it does sound better when rhyming with foreign.

Happy to be corrected!

xqwertyx · 15/10/2017 12:42

Either way you choose - i like it! Very nice name Flowers

n0ne · 15/10/2017 12:43

With a short vowel but it doesn't rhyme with foreign for me!

Torr-in
Forr-uhn

Different second vowel.

TheLegendOfBeans · 15/10/2017 12:47

Thorin (IME) is Icelandic; the masculine of Thora.

BUT it's torrin r/w forrin

The "þ" that it's spelt with makes the "th" sound...but you don't really hear it in Þorin

Christ...I've bored myself Confused

AllRoadsLeadBackToRadley · 15/10/2017 12:56

Isn't there a character in "Bring It On" with this name? Rhymes with "drawing" (witgout the G, obviously)

SupermarketSally · 15/10/2017 13:05

I used to know a Torin, his name rhymed with foreign.

He was also ridiculed for his name for years

TheLegendOfBeans · 15/10/2017 13:08

There is also a Lamaze dinosaur called Torin the TRex...

A bestseller IIRC

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 15/10/2017 13:56

Instinctively, I'd pronounce Torin as TORR-in. (To rhyme with 'florin')

If it had been spelled 'Toren', with an 'e', I'd pronounce it to rhyme with 'foreign'.

But not 'TAUR-in'. Though in another accent, I can see why it would sound more like that.

Nice name. Had not heard of it before.

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 15/10/2017 14:10

TheLegend,
"Christ...I've bored myself Confused "

Grin Am guilty of that too, increasingly!

ladybirdsaredotty · 15/10/2017 14:14

I know a baby one, his name is pronounced 'Torrin'. Which doesn't rhyme with foreign to me but I guess there might be an alternative pronunciation.

Tor-Rin

Pinky333777 · 15/10/2017 14:24

You pronounce it however you like. It’s a name 😊

euanthesheepiloveyou · 15/10/2017 15:38

I do pronounce it how I like, Pinky. I was curious how YOU would pronounce it! With an Irish accent it can sometimes sound more like the Taurus sound with a long 'O', rather than a shorter 'O' sound. He gets both amongst my friends & family & I let them call him whatever they like! Ridiculed, Sally?! I'm always a bit baffled when people say this. I'm a teacher & have never once seen or heard of anyone being ridiculed for their name. Not once. And I've taught some very interestingly named children. And I teach teenagers so it's not like it wouldn't occur to them...
Plus - it's not like he's called Flip Flop or Pineapple. Torin is an Irish name meaning Chief. Which is pretty cool imho. But yeah...whatevs. 😉

Torin rhymes with foreign. I like it; has a lord of the rings feel to it.

0hDeer · 15/10/2017 17:53

Touring without the g

NameChange30 · 15/10/2017 17:54

I'd pronounce it Torrin, which rhymes with "forrin" - the last syllable is slightly different from foreign

euanthesheepiloveyou · 15/10/2017 20:12

Thanks. It must definitely depend on your accent then because in my accent, Forrin & Foreign sound the same.

OP posts:
NameChange30 · 15/10/2017 20:18

forrin = foh-rin (as in "tin")
foreign = the last syllable is something between "ren" and "run", not an "i" sound

NoCryLilSoftSoft · 15/10/2017 20:19

The start of Taurus and foreign sound the same in my accent.
