Hi - slightly ridiculously we have our birth registration booked for this afternoon and are having last minute doubts about our preferred name - Lila. Our preferred pronounciation is Lie-la, but we know there are alternatives Lee-la and slightly less common Lil-la. We may postpone the registration but thought would see what the good people of mumsnet thought before we did ! We could spell it Lyla or Lilah, but we keep on coming back to Lila. Thanks in advance !

I wouldn’t be sure how to pn it between the two but I too like that spelling.

NoPinkLemonade · 13/10/2017 10:06

Lila = lie-lah
Lilla = lill-a
Leila = lee-la

Well to me, anyway Smile

Lilac would eliminate any confusion.

Orangebird69 · 13/10/2017 10:06

I'd say it as you do - Lie-la.

Belmo · 13/10/2017 10:06

I'd pronounce it lie-la, although I wouldn't be surprised if it was lee-la. Prefer lie-la though. Congratulations!

SandunesAndRainclouds · 13/10/2017 10:13

The one I know is Lie-la

PodgeBod · 13/10/2017 10:14

When I saw the title I read Lie-la

MadisonAvenue · 13/10/2017 10:15

I'd say Lie-la, like in the Oasis "Lyla" song.

dotdotdotmustdash · 13/10/2017 10:16

I would say Lie-La too

dotdotdotmustdash · 13/10/2017 10:17

But then I have a Leah and I thought everyone would pronounce it
Lee-ah, but many don't and she often performs and is announced as 'Lee'.

It bugs me.

QueuetoaskaQ · 13/10/2017 10:18

I think I'd say Lie-la but there's a chance I'd think Lee-la, too.

Would you consider popping and 'h' on the end so people will be certain of the pronunciation? Lilah, to me, is definitely pronounce Lie-la.

SuperBeagle · 13/10/2017 10:21

Lila is lie-la.

Leela is lee-la.

Leila is lay-la.

Lilla is lill-a.

Gaggleofgirls · 13/10/2017 10:21

I know a Lila that is pronounced Lil-la therefore that would be my go to.

I would say
Lyla = Lie-la
Leila = Lay-la
Leela = Lee-la
Lillah = Lil-la

Lila could be open to interpretation more

Roomba · 13/10/2017 10:23

I'd assume it was Lie-la as all the Lilas I have met have pronounced it that way.

Someone mentioned Leilah being pronounced as Leelah - my friend is called Leilah and pronounces it Layla.

Bucketsandspoons · 13/10/2017 10:28

I'd read it and say it as Ly-la unless told it was a different pronunciation. Lovely name and pretty spelling of it. .

Inneedofacookeddinner · 13/10/2017 10:37

Lie-luh

euanthesheepiloveyou · 13/10/2017 10:58

Lie-la. And I definitely prefer the Lila spelling. Lovely name.

Coey2016 · 13/10/2017 11:32

I would pronounce Lie-la. I like the spelling Lila, very pretty name

seven201 · 13/10/2017 11:32

Lie-la spelt Lila. I teach a few Lila'a and I'm crap at pronouncing kid's names correctly, but I can do Lila!

thepatchworkcat · 13/10/2017 11:38

I know a few (teacher) and they are all Lila = Lie-la. Also know a Lyla so if in doubt you could go with that spelling. I like both.

rowtheboats · 13/10/2017 11:46

Lila by far the best spelling- and pronounced lie-la imo. Lovely name!

LillyLollyLandy · 13/10/2017 12:09

Lie-la

Kolabioa · 13/10/2017 12:20

Thank you so much everyone, resounding vote, we're sticking to our guns, Lila (pronounced Lie-la) it is !

Pemba · 13/10/2017 12:21

Yes, Lila would be ly-la (lie-la) to me, same as Lilah. Although I know some people say lee-la, but that's more unusual I think.

Lila with a short i (to rhyme with miller) should have three 'l's, I would have thought? Lilla.

Don't find the spelling Lyla so pretty written down.

mintteaandbananabread · 13/10/2017 12:23

There is only one way to say Lila. Lillah and Leela are completely different names.

OldMacDonaldsfarmhouse · 13/10/2017 12:29

I have a Lila! We do get a few people either pronouncing it as Lee-lah, or trying to spell it as Lyla/Lilah. I do worry sometimes we've given her a name that she'll have to correct people on sometimes, but then I think that's ok and might help instil confidence. Either way, it's a beautiful name and the vast majority of people get it right. Congrats on your DD!
