Lysander?

Lysander is literally the only boys' name we like. I've just searched for it here on mumsnet and seen an old thread where someone said 'he'll have seven shades of crap beaten out of him at school', or something equally delightful. Now, I realise it probably sounds a bit pretentious in English, but DH is Greek (I'm from another European country) and we have a Greek surname. Does that mitigate somewhat? A little? Not at all?

I think it's gorgeous. I know a Lysander and have always loved his
name

OliviaStabler · 07/10/2017 23:01

I love the name. He is a loveable character in one of Jilly Coopers books!

This!

Liadain · 07/10/2017 23:20

I dont like it, think it's a bit wet tbh. But probably sounds better when with a Greek surname!

SuperBeagle · 07/10/2017 23:22

Horrible.

And reminds me of A Midsummer Night's Dream, which I don't consider a particularly wonderful association because it's dire and has orgy connotations

Sophronia · 08/10/2017 00:06

I love it! Especially with a Greek surname.

Buntysoven · 08/10/2017 00:23

Lovely.

SilverySurfer · 08/10/2017 03:08

Some talk of Alexander, and some of Hercules
Of Hector and Lysander, and such great names as these.
But of all the world's great heroes, there's none that can compare
With a tow, row, row, row, row, row, to the British Grenadier.
(last 2 lines of each verse can be repeated as chorus.)

Above is the first verse of The British Grenadiers song - they seem to rate it Grin

DaisyDaisydoo · 08/10/2017 06:30

I really love it

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 08/10/2017 10:04

How about Xander ?

Ionarocks · 08/10/2017 12:52

I like it. Is there an obvious shortening in Greek?

I have also taught teenagers in London for many years and have never come across being bullied because of your name. It's usually the teachers who raise an eyebrow, children are very used to unusual names nowadays.

It does make me think of MND but I am in my 30s and don't know anyone of my generation who reads Jilly Cooper.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/10/2017 12:55

It's a great name.

Olivelor · 08/10/2017 13:16

Lysander is a great name. Did you know that Lysander is a character in William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream? He's a true lover in the story.!!! So the name is fine IMO.

EKLInTraining · 08/10/2017 13:31

I like Lysander but like Lysandros even more!

2014newme · 08/10/2017 13:33

Jilly cooper

SumAndSubstance · 08/10/2017 13:35

Did you know that Lysander is a character in William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream?

Yes, I think we'd got that by this point in the thread... Grin
I like it, OP, especially with your Greek connection.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 08/10/2017 13:37

I immediately thought of Shakespeare's play as well.

I like it.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/10/2017 15:04

Lysandros is great but you have to do the end changing which gets complicated if not Greek.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/10/2017 15:10

I like it. Also thought immediately of the British Grenadiers!

flingingmelon · 08/10/2017 15:12

Love it

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/10/2017 15:12

I did also think of the Lysander the song refers to - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysander. Not sure I'd regard any ancient Spartan as a perfect role model, but there's no denying he was a great leader and to rise to be a general from slave or helot (serf) origins he must have been something special.

AmysTiara · 08/10/2017 15:21

I'm sorry but i think it's awful. It's too drippy sounding somehow.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/10/2017 15:38

Oh no, not drippy at all,it's a good, strong name imo!

pipilangstrumpf · 08/10/2017 16:09

Lysander is beautiful! The opposite of drippy, very strong and cool!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 08/10/2017 16:12

Jilly Cooper.

IHopeYourCakeIsShit · 08/10/2017 16:13

I thought Shakespeare rather than Jilly Cooper, absolutely love it.
