Help with middle name and spelling?

I think we've finally decided on a boy name. It's taken aaaages to decide and is the only boy name we both like. I've been through a lot of lists of names and a fair few MN threads. DH and I have very different taste in names and honestly, it's been driving me bonkers, hence some ridiculous excitement on my part over finally choosing the name! For that reason we probably don't need any more suggestions on first names now.

Anyway, the name is Rohan, pronounce the same as Rowan, (possibly we would spell it Rowan. Although, on the last thread I had about it, a few people said that was more of a girl's name to them)? What are people's thoughts on the spelling? I am Irish and DH is English, if that makes a difference. We live in England.

Also, what middle name do you think? Our surname is a common, British surname ending in -son. Think Jackson.

I like:

Rohan / Rowan Isaac
Rohan / Rowan Francis
Rohan / Rowan George
Rohan / Rowan Jacob
Rohan / Rowan Luke
Rohan / Rowan Matthew
Rohan / Rowan Samuel

We already have a DD with a classic / traditionally British, top 100, (but not top 50), name. Her middle name honours one of our parents who sadly died just before I fell pregnant.

Tia.

Rowan Jacob is my favourite. I would have pronounced Rohan as row-han before I read this thread.

NuffSaidSam · 01/10/2017 19:25

Love Rowan. Definitely spell it Rowan though. Rohan is just asking to be pronounced Ro-han.

I like Rowan Francis best.

All my dc's have a middle name which is a tribute to a family member. Dc1 is Alan after both grandads. Dc2 first name is his grandads (different dad to dc1), middle name after my db. Dd middle name after the aunt who died as a child and dc4 middle name a shortened version of his dads name. Ronan is a gorgeous name, I like Rohan Miles, Rohan Paul, Ronan Bran and Rohan Sean.

FizzyGreenWater · 01/10/2017 19:28

Definitely Rowan. Rohan is the outdoor clothing company.

It's one of the few names I think is genuinely unisex - I know two girls and two boys called it.

I like Rowan Isaac and Rowan Jacob.

calamityjam · 01/10/2017 19:28

Should say, all the Ronans should be Rohan, but my phone doesn't agree

starzig · 01/10/2017 19:29

I like Isaac. As for rowan/Rowan, it depends how you want it pronounced. Row as in row a boat (rohan) or row as in argue (rowan). Think the latter sounds a little girlier.

ClosedAuraOpenMind · 01/10/2017 19:30

Rowan is my absolute favourite boys name. Rowan Matthew is lovely

LoislovesStewie · 01/10/2017 19:31

I like Rowan Jacob; I always think it's better to have names spelt the way it's said otherwise you are spending half your time correcting the pronunciation.

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 01/10/2017 19:31

Oh sorry, I'd forgotten there was another pronunciation of Rowan! We would pronounce row like a boat.

NuffSaidSam · 01/10/2017 19:32

No-one pronounces the Row in Rowan as row like an argument!!

It's Row as in row a boat. Always. Girls and Boys.

SecretlyChartreuse · 01/10/2017 19:33

I dated a Rohan, of Irish descent, who pronounced it ROW-han

You do need to be aware of the Lord of the Rings connections as his friends may be assume you are fans as I did with my Rohan. Rohan is a kingdom in Lord of the Rings.

Do go with Rowan if the pronunciation is an issue. It's a lovely unisex name.

MaidenMotherCrone · 01/10/2017 19:34

I have a Rowan Flyn. I don't think of it as a girls/unisex name, I think that's a relatively recent thing. My Rowan is an adult and we've never come across another. We pronounce it Row( as in boat)- un.

euanthesheepiloveyou · 01/10/2017 19:34

Our son is Rowan Jude. Definitely prefer that spelling to Rohan (as a lot of people pronounce the 'h' with that spelling). I like Rowan Francis or Rowan Jacob best from your list.

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 01/10/2017 19:35

@nuffsaid

I thought I'd read on here that it was row as in argument in Scotland..? Can't trust MN though Wink.

I'd go for Rowan Jacob. Lovely name.

starzig · 01/10/2017 19:36

I have always pronounced Rowan as in argue. Same with the tree. Maybe it depends where you are from

TeshiB · 01/10/2017 19:40

Rowan Jacob!

PickleFish · 01/10/2017 19:46

yes I think the tree is said Row (as in argument) in Scotland, and hence the name can be too. More commonly Row (as in boat) in England. But i've heard both for the tree for sure.

Rohan I think is also an Indian (boys) name. Much less common for girls spelled that way, but I know one (named for the LotR connection). She sometimes gets Ro-anne (emphasis on the -anne) even though she says it just like Rowan.

rachrach2 · 01/10/2017 19:51

I'd definitely spell it Rowan for the pronunciation you want. I like Jacob, George, Matthew or Samuel as middle names.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 01/10/2017 20:19

Rowan Francis is my choice.

17caterpillars1mouse · 01/10/2017 20:21

Rowan Francis

Rowan is lovely. I would automatically pronounce Rohan slightly differently. Love Francis and it's unexpected

MarklahMarklah · 01/10/2017 20:23

I know a (male) Trinidadian Rohan, pronounced Row-Han. I'd suggest Rowan as the spelling if you want the correct pronunciation for your choice.

Seti · 01/10/2017 20:48

I've just spent 5 minutes trying to rhyme argue and rowan BlushGrin

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 01/10/2017 21:01

Grin seti.

Is your username related to ancient Egypt btw?
