So since my family found out I was pregnant, my mum has had an obsession with the name Malakai! I hated it and laughed it off to start with but it's actually really growing on me... what's everyone's opinions? I'm due 14/09/18!!

It's not incorrect, it's a variation on the traditional name.

I don’t dislike Malachi but I don’t like Mal. Dislike the spelling in your OP.

Mulch · 28/09/2017 21:15

It's a lovely name but why subject your child to having to correct people on the spelling for the rest of their lives

Justgivemesomepeace · 28/09/2017 21:17

I really like it but would spell it Malachi

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 28/09/2017 21:21

Oh well if you're set on your wrong unique spelling, then no, I don't like it. Sorry!

RideSallyRide · 28/09/2017 21:25

No, no it isn't a "variation" it is incorrect.

ChocolateCrunch · 28/09/2017 21:26

I like it, whichever why you spell it

LapCatLicker · 28/09/2017 21:26

Lovely name. Classic yet still slightly different. But spell it correctly for the love of Pete. Please. My nephew has a 'normal' name with a 'quirky' spelling. He's 13 and it drives him bonkers.

ElChan03 · 28/09/2017 21:26

Agree with past posts original spelling! Don't butcher a traditional spelling of a name for no good reason. A name defines a child and from experience you can grow resentful of a name no one can spell properly.

Sadik · 28/09/2017 21:27

I know a Malakai spelt that way (as well as a Malachy). I think it's a good name, but have to say I'm not so keen on Mal as a shortening.

ChocolateCrunch · 28/09/2017 21:27

way

Wolfiefan · 28/09/2017 21:28

Don't make up a spelling to be youneeq. Your child has to live with that.

DangerMouse17 · 28/09/2017 21:29

Nice name but spell it properly.

MongerTruffle · 28/09/2017 21:32

Malakai is definitely a real spelling.

It was the 459th most popular name last year (out of 6247).

welshweasel · 28/09/2017 21:35

ride Grin

The names ok but bloody spell it properly

TheMasterNotMargarita · 28/09/2017 21:41

Sorry but Polike 😂😂😂😂😂

countycouncil · 28/09/2017 21:51

Love it. That's how they spell it in the Pacific Islands so it's not wrong but if you're not in the Southern Hemisphere I'd go for the more conventional spelling

Heratnumber7 · 28/09/2017 21:57

Are you an Orthodox Jew?
If you are going to use it, use the correct spelling - Malachi.

Heratnumber7 · 28/09/2017 21:58

* there's no 'right' way to spell a name anymore*
Yes, there is.

KindleBueno · 28/09/2017 22:40

Malachy is a beautiful name. Your spelling of it makes my heart sad.

Liadain · 28/09/2017 22:41

Yes, there are incorrect ways to spell a name. It's why we dont spell Olivia as Oylleeveeeah, for example.

Now, Malakai seems to be a legit spelling of the name, so that isn't relevant...but imo Malachi is nicer.

BellMcEnd · 28/09/2017 22:46

Wouldn't Malakai and Malachy be pronounced differently though?

I know a couple of Malachys and they're both pronounced Ma-la-key. I don't know any Malakais but I'd have thought it would be Ma-la-Kai with the last syllable to rhyme with sky.

I think both names are lovely but I think quite different. Happy to be corrected, mind you!

BellMcEnd · 28/09/2017 22:48

(Sorry, Malachi / Malachy. My friend's son is Malachy)

countycouncil · 28/09/2017 22:52

In my experience (southern hemisphere), Malakai is pronounced mal- ah - kai (to rhyme with sky) as a pp said. Again, that's a legitimate spelling and who cares if it's not common where you live.

Onecutefox · 28/09/2017 23:01

I would be careful with the spelling as malaka or malakas in Greek means something rude. Some people may not know how to pronounce Malachi correctly.
