What do you think about naming a boy after his Dad?

Just wondering. If I have a boy I know dh would like this and I like his name but would he be forever xxxjunior?

Has anyone done this?

I know someone who is John Smith VI (not his really real name if you know what I mean).

oldmacdonalde471 · 26/09/2017 17:06

I quite like it.

But I do think that the baby would be -junior or baby- forever, especially when you talk about your DH and DS with friends/family.

strangestdirection · 26/09/2017 17:08

I always think of that bit in The Royle Family....

Denise: If the baby's a boy Dave wants to call it Dave. Yknow, after him.
Jim: But you're already Dave! Get a bloody grip of yourself, son!

I like family names, I have the middle name of my Dads niece and my daughters have family names as middle names but wholesale naming after and naming after parents I don't get. And if you're going to call the son after their Dad alright, whatever.... but will any daughters be named after you? If so, crack on. If not, maybe give the concept some more thought.

PandaCat · 26/09/2017 17:08

I would use it as a middle name maybe, rather than the first name. I know people with their father's name as first, but they use their middle name in day to day life instead

ShizzleYoDrizzle · 26/09/2017 17:09

I know someone who is John Smith VI

I'd be the cow who'd say 'sorry love, but we're not following that family tradition'.

Christmastree43 · 26/09/2017 17:10

Oh I love it and would like a son should I have one to be named after his dad... but my DP does have an awesome name 😬 And he would love it too.

Wouldn't name a girl after me though... would find that weird

My mother hates the idea

Theworldisfullofidiots · 26/09/2017 17:11

I wanted to name my son after my dad (who is dead). My dh is also called that so we decided not to as it is weird. So he has my dad's middle name

BertrandRussell · 26/09/2017 17:11

My ds is "Little Patrick" to the older generation of dp's family, despite the fact that "Big Patrick" has been dead for more than 10 years and Little Patrick is currently 4 inches taller than Big Patrick was!

sycamore54321 · 26/09/2017 17:14

I hate it for all the reasons already stated - egotistical, sexist, often dismissive of the other parents' preferences. It's also appears to disrespect the child as an individual - I would very much dislike having another MyFirstName MySurname in my acquaintance, let alone living in the same house as me.

I also think it must be hard on the other children that Special Son has Daddy's name.

NameChange30 · 26/09/2017 17:15

"I wouldnt name a dd after me, no!"

Don't do it, then.

If you wouldn't name a girl after her mother, don't name a boy after his father.

They usually get their father's surname. You can use his first name as a middle name if you must.

Justmuddlingalong · 26/09/2017 17:18

I wonder what other 'traditions' will pop up in the years to come.

Smartiepants79 · 26/09/2017 17:21

It makes me cringe and I can't really explain why. I'm all for family names and think using them as middle names or skipping a generation is great but XXXjunior is horrible in my opnion.
I too think it's a bit male chest beating and 'look here at the fruit of my loins' kind of thing.

FannyTheFlamingo · 26/09/2017 17:22

DH's name was on my baby name list before I met him, so I'd definitely want to use if if we had a DS.

3wayburger · 26/09/2017 17:23

Dps brother is still know as “Little un “
As he was named after Dps dad .
He hates it! He is a grown man and no one in the family uses his name.

BertrandRussell · 26/09/2017 17:25

My ds has always liked being Little Patrick to the older generation of dp's family. It makes him feel connected.

BusterGonad · 26/09/2017 17:29

I really don't like it myself.

PizzaHerbs · 26/09/2017 17:29

I can see why Bertrand I like that family connection.

My dh is the 6th generation with the same name and his family assumed we would give it to our ds1. It's already confusing having a dh and fil with the same name so I overruled and used it as a middle name instead. I like the fact my ds has a name of his own but I understand why people choose to follow tradition.

ShizzleYoDrizzle · 26/09/2017 17:30

I think it's fine if it's grandad/grandson, it's just father and son having the same name that makes me think 'nah'.

AudacityJones · 26/09/2017 17:50

Then again, Serena's named her daughter after her DP!

Longdistance · 26/09/2017 17:55

My db was named after my df.

They always got each other's post which was a pita.

megletthesecond · 26/09/2017 18:06

Don't like it.
It also makes admin a nightmare for office staff like me.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 26/09/2017 18:13

I don't like the idea at all (even though I like DH's name). If he'd wanted to use his first name for DS, then I'd have insisted on using my surname.

We did use family names, but only as a second middle name (DS has his great-uncles name and DD has her great-grandma's name).

bridgetreilly · 26/09/2017 18:45

He doesn't have to be X Junior.

He could have a different shortened form.
He could have an entirely different nickname.
Or he could be known by his middle name. When people were often called after their parents, this was very common. Two of my grandparents were always known by their middle name, and I know several other people in my generation for whom this is also true.

Having said that, it is a bit weird. Why not give it as the middle name and let him have his own first name?

PaintingOwls · 26/09/2017 18:47

Old fashioned and twee.

My mum and uncle are named after their parents and always get referred to as "old Mary" or "little John".
