Names like Sylvester?

DH and I are really struggling to find any boys' names that we both like. TBH I'm having a hard time finding any that I like myself let alone one which will also appeal to DH.

I recently thought of Sylvester and the more I think about it the more I like it. I know that there's the cat thing and also Stallone, but I really like the sound of it and think that it's actually a pretty sweet name. It's got a nice length and sounds kind of unusual but also solid.

However! DH had a pet cat called Sylvester and I absolutely understand why this would be a sticking point for him. Does anyone have any suggestions for other names that either sound like Sylvester, or have similar qualities? I'm starting to get pretty despondent about ever finding something!

Thanks! Lots of suggestions Smile

I kind of like Sylvain, Ernest and Caspar. And Horatio is pretty cool, actually, but maybe a bit OTT.

Maybe one of these will grow on me like Sylvester did.

How about Lysander?

Maudlinmaud · 26/09/2017 12:44

I always think Ambrose is similar to Sylvester. The Sylvester I know is Sylvie which is unusual but nice and suits him.

Lysander is actually remarkably similar to Sylvester! Not sure if I like it though (being thoroughly unreasonable Smile)

I do quite like Ambrose, and maybe Gideon but it's a bit biblical.

Thanks!

I never say this on name posts but .... Don't do Sylvester. It was my maiden name and I went through my whole life having daily cat and Stallone jokes. That was as a surname i dread to think how much more stick I would have got if it was my first

Sylvander?

It was Robert Burns's pseudonym when writing secret love letters. (not that that should sway you - just proving I didn't just make it up!)

Sebastian

Thanks everyone! Sorry for not responding for a while - have had a busy week.

Haha HoratioNightboy Sylvander does sound a little made up, but very close to Sylvester Grin I quite like it!

Don't worry mummytwoh, we definitely won't actually use Sylvester as DH had a pet cat by that name and I don't expect him to get past that. I'm sorry that you had trouble with it as a maiden name though. It's such a great name!

Sylvain is a French similar name. To me Sylvester and Caspar are cats names, maybe you need a cat Smile

MarmiteAndPB · 29/09/2017 15:58

Lily Grin But really, Felix was an established "cat's name" for years but it's getting popular again. What's wrong with cat's names? Wink

According to my cat Felix is a very bad cat food Wink. My son does sometimes insist we call him Woofie so maybe there are children happy to be named after animals / cat food. One very embarrassing conversation with the Headmistress where he would only answer to Woofie and bark. Blush

fairyofallthings · 01/10/2017 22:07

I just had to come on here and see if anybody had suggested Tweetiepie!

My second thought was of Dr Who. I think I'd choose a different name, sorry OP.

lindblum · 01/10/2017 23:49

Alexander can do no wrong.

Felix is lovely and getting towards outgrowing the cat thing.

Look at Ancient Greek names - a lot of them are along the Evander, Lysander route!
