Call your baby one name, but pronounce it a different way?

e.g. Baby name = Jean
Pronounced =John

Can't help thinking that this is setting the poor child up for a lifetime of correcting people.

(It's not Jean btw)

I have came across a Lewis pronounce Louis.
And a Steward pronounced Stewart.

I think it's sometimes the case that people don't actually realise and it's a little bit awkward to correct them. Maybe birth registrars should have special training in this area.

steppemum · 24/09/2017 22:31

hmm, in the above example, then if you were French it would be fine.

Just as my dh is dutch, if we chose to use a name and pronounce it the dutch way, eg Izak (pronounced with eezack, not eyezack)

But otherwise, it would be a bit odd I think.

Migraleve · 24/09/2017 22:43

I wouldn't, it seems like a complete hassle for nothing. I would go with 'john'

igotyoubabe · 24/09/2017 22:45

Erm... Jean is French?! Hmm

pipilangstrumpf · 24/09/2017 22:47

They must be French! Jean is pronounced John (without the n).

Many names are pronounced differently in other languages.

PelvicFloorClenchReminder · 24/09/2017 22:58

Like calling a child Balonz and pronouncing it Jeremy you mean?

TrumpsWigmaker · 24/09/2017 23:19

Bipi they're not French.

If it's Jean as in the French pronunciation, then I don't see a problem with it. Maybe they are mispronouncing the French name Jean? I don't think that's completely bonkers. There are plenty of Amelies, Louis(s) and Madeleines with English parents where I live. None of them pronounce the names in the French way (I used to live in France and speak French).

steppemum · 25/09/2017 09:46

igotyoubabe - Jean can be the French name which is equivalent to John and pronounced pretty much like John, but with a softer J sound

Of course it can also be the English femal name Jean (as in Billy Jean King)

Glumglowworm · 25/09/2017 19:20

Fine if it's legitimate pronunciation from another country or language, I would assume parents have links to it.

Weird to make up their own though

MyBreadIsEggy · 25/09/2017 19:23

If they are French then yes - by all means go for it.
But as you've said they aren't French, and don't pronounce it the French way, then it's a bit odd Hmm

AdalindSchade · 25/09/2017 19:38

She said it's not jean! That was an example I guess

Montsti · 25/09/2017 20:42

It's also pronounced that way in Afrikaans - are they South African?

FindTheLightSwitchDarren · 25/09/2017 21:04

Oh sorry, not Jean? Well, it's hard to say, unless we know what the names are tbh.

I have heard of Bleu being pronounced Blue. That's a bit silly imo; like Guillaume being pronounced William, or Seamus being pronounced James.

Jean (the French pronunciation) and John aren't miles apart. It's really just the softer j and n in the French. Blue and Bleu are quite different. I think that most people would know that Bleu is not pronounced 'blue'; Bleu de Chanel etc.

NearLifeExperience · 25/09/2017 23:38

Lewis pronounced Louis is even worse than Louis pronounced Lewis!
